We hiked this trail and it was really spectacular. The weather was cool and breezy for AZ the wind provided a nice cushion of air under the Turkey Bezzard's wings to glide on that spotted our Cochapoo Cayenne. The flowers were blooming although there were only ablut 33% in bloom, loaded with buds, should be even better in the following weeks.
We stopped at Goldfield Ghost town for a burger and suds after the trip. There were some Canadians at our table out on the balcony. They were totally nice, even took a picture of us!

I took some people out to the Heiroglyphics again and the water was really flowing after all the rain we have had. It will be, (as most of the small waterfalls along the Peralta trail in the Superstitions will be), flowing until late April. The mountain is so high it takes that long for the water to percolate down hill. It is always a thrill to escort newbies out to this it is amazing.

Access from Beverly Canyon off 46th street and Baseline, go West out of the parking lot. Hike about 1/2 mile to the Ridgeline trail, there are petroglyphs along the way, depicting a hunt where the hunters circled the mountains in unison flushing the game towards the center, where the hunt actually took place. Watch for Coyote, Mule Deer and Cougars, they are plentiful in the area. There are also some small foundations near the west end of the parking lot you may find interesting.

I have been hiking South mountain for a long time and thought I would share with everyone the beauty this time of year. It is a good time for beginners to get out, 50+ degrees in the am. It has rained recently, so I took Cayenne my hiking companion/dog, a Cockapoo up the National trail into the Hidden Valley trrough fatman's pass, then down the path of the water falls back to the trail head. See map http://hikearizona.com/images/flashmaps ... inmaps.swf There has been lots of coyotes yapping it up, mating season perhaps, and Cayenne startled one :o ,then we watched as it returned to a pack of 4 back in the bushes. It will become more and more spactacular with flowers as we get into spring after all the rain.
There are petroglyphs around as well if you hunt hard enough.

This was a neat hike close to town. If you have trouble finding it ask the fire department, that's what I did. We took our cockapoo (very small dog),she had no problem. It was pretty busy on the weekend, but I was there on a Wednesday and it was real isolated. The trails are very well marked, if you are training for a triathalon it would be a good place to practice hike-a-biking- more carry than ride.
