We finally finished what we started over 6 months ago! If you have not done the Flatiron, you have missed one of the most complete hikes this area "haz" to offer!! It starts with an easy stroll up the trail and then offers up a little elevation change with rock formations that only the Supe's can give! But...when you reach the slickrock area, be prepared to climb and climb and climb!!! On this day, the trail was not lacking for footprints and was overflowing with inspirations! We first stepped aside to allow a father and his young son to pass us on their way to the top. Next, we were passed by a gentleman that was 71 years old! He had to have stretched the trail into a 6 mile oneway hike!! He was way off the trail to the left and would yell back at us that 'this isn't the right way'! Five minutes later we would see him way off to the right of the trail and couldn't even hear what he was saying to us! He still beat us to the top! We gave way a third time to a group that was on their way up. As the last guy went past, a feeling of admiration came over us! His right leg was metal from the knee down with a tennis shoe mounted on it! Anyway, the trip to the top can be challenging but is well worth the effort! The views are fantastic and not something you will soon forget! Also, if you hop over the saddle onto the Ridgeline, you'll probably find yourself all alone in the wilderness like we did. Be careful here...the Ridgeline will try to coax you deeper into the wilderness...but, that's a different hike you will need to plan for in advance! :o)

Ok...this is not really the kind of story you like to share but, here goes! It's Wednesday, May 9th, 12:30 pm. The temperature outside has just passed the 102 degree mark (topped out later at 106 degrees)! This (don't ask why) is the day we decided to attempt the Flat(hot)iron! We carried 100 oz. of water each plus an extra 16 oz. bottle and they all ran out just as we reached the base of the Flatiron. At this point, the sun was leaving and we decided we should too. All in all, arriving back at the trailhead at 2:30am the next morning, it was a very interesting hike filled with beautiful sites and sounds...one sound that was heard a lot after it got very dark...I just want to be down from here! Being new at this, we obviously missed the trial at the top of the slick rock area. So, if anybody has any simple directions (first grade edition) that would help get us from that area to the top, they would be greatly appreciated...thanks!
