I love hiking the Tom Thumb Trail. It is about 4.5 miles round trip...the first 35 minutes are a bit steep but after that it is great! Once you come to the junction where the East End Trail starts you can hike to the left and go about 100 yards (over boulders) and find the "Miner's Cave" which is quite interesting . It contains an old picnic table, many old miner items (tools, oil lamps, sand bags that make up a bed, etc). I made a log book to sign in if you get there. Then you continue on to the Thumb. If you go all the way to the base, you can get around to the opposite side and about 100 yards away is the "Ogre's Den" where hikers leave trinkets for good luck.....a little hard to find the first time....I would be happy to lead you up there....just shoot me an e-mail gwojton@hotmail.com
Happy Hiking! :) Gary

I hiked Pinnacle Peak 7 days in a row from July 12 - July 18, 2005. This was a "hot spell" with the temperature being 92 at 6:00am so I hiked at 5:30 in the morning except for one day when I slept in...started the hike at 10:00am and the temp got up to 116! The life savers here were the broad rimmed hat and the camelback water backpack which holds about 35oz of water...which was all gone by the end of the hike. If you look at the three photos....first one is of me at the top of the mountain...second one was looking at the sunrise while being about 3/4 of the way up; and the third photo is of a dead snake on the trail...I stuck my foot in the photo for size comparison. The hikes each day were fantastic...looking at the multi-million dollar estates is breat-taking....as is the view of the mountains and city. The round trip is stated at 3.5 miles but once you get to the bottom of the mountain, you can continue on a path to a fence which will then make the total distance 4.0 miles.
