The peak is 7040 feet high, that is a total elevation gain of approximately 4200 feet. Over 9 miles. Thats a quite moderate rate but the mere distance makes it a strenuous hike in one day.
The trailhead is easily accessible by car on a paved road to the picnic area. A seven day pass costs $ 10.
The hike is easy to follow, not steep and has no difficult parts. After 2 hours you leave the desert and enter woodland. The hike goes up and down several times. After 3-4 hours you should reach Juniper Basin, a campsite. Juniper Basin is 6.9 miles from the trailhead.
From Juniper Basin it is another 2.1 miles to Tanque Verde Peak. As you gain elevation the vegetation changes to pine forrest which provides some shadow most of the way up to the peak. The scenic provides a view of Tucson in the west and Coronado National Forest to the north and east. |
