My grandson Stephen and I hit the trailhead at about 9:30AM after a pleasant drive up from Chandler which included a stop at Starbucks. At the trailhead there were a couple of fellows who were going to fish Tonto Creek. We met one other person right at the closed gate to the campground, and those were all the people we saw for the whole hike. I guess the crowds aren't too bad on a Thursday.
We kept to the right along the creek on the way up. After the 2nd move to the right, the trail petered out and we had to cross the creek a couple of times to finally get back to the rocky main trail. We were watching dark clouds moving rather rapidly toward the Northeast, and hoping they would not produce rain while we were on the trail. We made it up in about 1hr 45 min, as my 6' 4" 21 year old grandson sets a decent pace. This is a training hike for me in preparation for Humphreys in a few weeks.
This is my 2nd trip on this trail, and the spring was as impressive on this trip as it was when I saw it the first time. After lunch on the flat spot to the north of the spring, we returned via the Horton Creek trail rather than the Derrick trail that I took on the first hike.
After not getting any rain on the trail, we hit a "frog strangler" on the road between Star Valley and Payson. All I can say is great timing.
If I don't get any major objections, I will try more triplogs. I love this website, it is great!!
