Adell, my 16 month old was beyond excited to be outside of the house and out in the beautiful tonto forest. Lots of smiles and giggles. We began the escapade with her walking at her own pace, with a bit of prodding we got her to hike snail speed. But for a toddler she did wonderfully. Any time she would fall, she'd get back up again without missing a beat.
Patiently we waited with her and hiked snail speed for a few minutes, then got her into the baby carrier and started at a more moderate pace. Wife Katie was carrying her for the first 15 or so, but decided that was a bit to much to add to her already pregnant self. That meant I got to carry the backpack with snacks and water, and the baby. Good workout for me so I don't mind.
Due to a pre-arranged obligation we had to be back home fairly early which equated to about a 2 hour gap for hiking. With a baby that would tire of riding along, we prob only got about a mile in and had to turn around.
We have been along this trail a couple of times. I came 3 times last season. This time around the prickly pear cacti were very badly beaten up along the edge of the trail. Not sure if this was the destructive nature of imbecil humans or just a bad freeze the they haven't come back from. Last year in march these prickly pears were putting on wonderful fruit.
After a wonderful hike we drove a little ways to a pullout with a fire pit and re-heated some chinese food. Deliciousness in a foil dinner, and simple. |
