We left Gilbert, AZ about 8am driving along The Apache Trail. We made it to Apache Lake about 10am with pit stops for the all-important Tonto Pass ($6 purchased at the Quik Trip on Idaho) and a few photos at Fish Creek (okay I took a bunch more from the car). This is a perfect time to head out to the SRP reservoirs with the major boat traffic on hiatus until summer. Apache Trail is a beautiful drive especially when you drive slow enough to enjoy the view and spare your vehicle along the washboard sections of the dirt road.

When we arrived at the lake, Service Road 79 led us to a fork in the road. To the right, the Marina/Resort. To the left a dirt road leading to a beach. We headed to the beach, put in and headed west. We paddled up the south end of the lake taking a peek at the different coves along the way. Near Three Bar Point, we decided to take a break along the Cathedral Cliffs and the cove which leads to Indian Wash. We passed a fisherman with a telescope looking for mountain sheep but there weren't any in sight.

The final leg of our westward journey was to Castle Rock which was just at four miles from our starting point. My husband and friend were hoping to make it to Horse Mesa Dam but we'll need to leave that for another day. We headed back from whence we came...

I highly recommend the journey along Apache Trail and a paddle on Apache Lake!

If you're in the Aspen area, a must-see are the Maroon Bells. We stayed in Glenwood Springs about an hour from Aspen. Reading up on the web, we discovered that the best time to view the Bells is at sunrise. That meant an early start departing no later than 4:00am from Glenwood Springs. Well worth the early start because they are spectacular! The trail is well groomed and extremely easy to walk around the lake. If you choose to arrive at dawn, you can drive your car close to the lake. Buses transport people into the park beginning at 9:00am. Bus info can be found here: http://www.stayaspensnowmass.com/activi ... roon-bells.

We continued on the Upper Scenic loop but ran out of time to head up to Crater Lake. Next time! I highly recommend a visit to the Maroon Bells.
