Started what we thought was going to be a 3 day trip...cut short due to the fire. We arrived at the 25 and Black River crossing on 5/28. Camped at Fish Creek confluence. Day two we day hiked upstream just short of Bear Creek. On our way back to camp we noticed smoke towards Bear Wallow. We decided to head out...turned out to be a goode decision. I am posting what might be the last photo set of this area for quite a while.

On a positive note, the drive and hike were great. plenty of creek crossings to cool down. Found a good swim hole and did some cliff jumping. Temperatures were perfect, wind was mild compared to what weather reports were anticipating. A shame we wont be returning any time soon.

GPS route will be posted once i clean it up a little.

Hiked down Fossil Creek to Verde confluence, then up the Verde to Childs Campground. More than 30 creek crossings down Fossil. Saw turtles, toads, ducks, geckos, bats, bald eagles, bear tracks and mountain lion tracks. no other people until campground.

Much thanks to Don (Don the canoer and his friend Alvin for the ride back to our truck - 3.5 miles up road).

I have a few pictures and the gps route if anyone is interested.

Another awesome adventure in West Clear Creek...Arrived at trailhead Friday morning 11-26 8am, no other souls around. Morning temp was cold, probably around 30 degrees, maybe lower. Did not hike the summit, instead, we stayed low and boulder hopped the creek. From TH, we hiked about 6.85 miles to the first decent camp site. Day 2 we day hiked/scrambled along the creek for almost 2 miles, which was slow going due to the many creek crossings and boulder hopping. Our day hike stopped when we approached the mandatory swim upstream just before Maiden Falls....wall to wall canyon, with large tree wedged in between. Returned back to camp. Both Friday and Saturday were clear and sunny with high temps around 60 and lows around 30. Woke up on day 3, Sunday November 28th, in the middle of a snow storm (at a mere 4200 feet). I initially thought the noise that woke me up was rain, but was actually pleasantly surprised/relieved to find our camp site covered in snow. As for wild life, we saw a few bald eagles Saturday around 3pm, heard a few bats after night fall, saw some bear scat on the trail, saw a few fish jumping and a few deer tracks as well. I have the GPS route if any one is interested. I did not post it because we did not hike the actual route described.

driving on the forest roads were rough. definitely required 4x4 clearance. never again, point trail all the way. we enjoyed the solitude as always. hike down was steep but quick.

i would like to extend a long middle finger to the a** holes who thought it was ok to leave a dirty diaper at the trail head. Really??

Left trailhead at 9am Saturday Feb. 13th 2010. Arrived at camp after second creek crossing around 12:30pm (stopping at least half a dozen times to take some photos). Saw a few day hikers and overnighters leaving on our way in. Set up camp and then proceeded to boulder hop the remaining half mile to the falls. Pretty warm during the day, high temps around 70 degrees and night time low around 35 - 40. Plenty of fire wood, no bugs or any other critters. Clear sky, no moon, but could see the phoenix glow out to our west. GPS estimated about 6.25 miles to camp and another 0.5 mile to the actual waterfall. Left camp Sunday February 14th at 9am. Saw several day hikers as well as several others making their way from Reavis Canyon Ranch. Sunshine hit the campsite area as we were leaving. We reached the trailhead at 1pm. The first uphill ascent leaving the canyon could be a challenge depending on your pack weight. The last 3.5 miles is a breeze, we finshed in about 1 hour. *Note to self: do not ever leave again on a Sunday. Traffic leaving Sunday on 88 towards Apache Junction was terrible with all the old people and bikers going out for their Sunday cruise through Tortilla Flat.* Traffic coming in on Saturday was not an issue.

Hiked down to Hells Hole again after all the rain and snow. We first went the day after Thanksgiving 2009 for a few days and decided to go again after all the precipitation. Our second trip started on January 29, 2010 and we returned January 31. The trail was all snow, mud, water and ice, sometimes over a foot deep. We saw waterfalls that did not exist on the previous trip. The devastation from all the water flow was unreal. The campsite was annihilated. Despite the carnage, we made it all the way down to the confluence of Workman Creek and Salome Creek, which we did not accomplish on the first trip. This place is awesome. I now appreciate the warnings about flash floods. We saw rocks lodged between trees higher than our heads. The power of water is amazing. The hike starts out mellow but the descent at the end can put a hurtin on one's soul. sunshine was minimal, nights were long and cold, hard to start a fire with wet wood, but it was well worth it.
