This was a test of my Garmin 450t upgrade. Seems to have been a successful upgrade, but the experience was so painful that I wonder why Garmin is still in business. Why in God's name would anyone use a Garmin P-O-S when an app on their phone can create a track easier and better than a Garmin P-O-S.

Here's a challenge to my HAZ peeps: can you envision a way to negotiate the EHTS without back tracking on any trail section?

DONE! My efforts to map the Enchanted Hills Trail System in its entirety are DONE. I've posted my GPXs of the ECTS in three distinct posts. Now if you'll cut me a little slack, I'll do a little Googling to figure out how to post it as a complete system. Until that time, go with god.

It was great to get out out amongst the cholla, and rocks, and cow dung, etc. again. Probably a little further than my current level of fitness would indicate was reasonable, but the extended downhill slalom through the cactus made it all worthwhile. A really fun day!

I may soon have occasion to add Crawl-Pub Crawl to my ever expanding list of adventures. When Green Feet Brewing opens its doors for business in the next month or so, 44th Street, Tucson may have the densest population of pubs (breweries actually, but where's the alliteration?) in the world (USofA?, Arizona?, Tucson?). Three breweries in a couple of hundred yards. I don't need no stinkin' bike, I can crawl to all of those spots. Impressive, if I do say so myself. My challenge to my fellow HAZ peepers is to come up with a more impressive list than what 44th Street will have to offer.

RELAX!!! The route of this year's Xmas Eve Bike-Pub Crawl, [ gps route ] , is now yours. As God is wont to say, "anything worth having, is worth waiting for". My reason for this trek was to share some Holiday Revelry with yooz guys, my HAZ hikin' peeps. Unfortunately, all the fine watering holes I attended were bedecked less for Christmas, and more for Festivus. Oh well, the beer was good (redundant?).

To purloin a line from an Old Milwaukee Beer commercial, "It just don't get no better than this". GREAT FUN! The whole ride was GREAT FUN, but once we hit the northern-most turn around point the ride went to another level. The ride to the turn around point was a barely noticeable, gradual ascent , but once we turned the ride became a hold on, and enjoy this FAST, slalom through the desert back to the vehicle. The only time we hit the brakes was to avoid a couple of healthy rattlesnakes who appeared to like the trail as much as my biking buddy and I.

Southern Arizona Mountain Bike Association (SAMBA) weekly Monday night ride. This week's ride was on a portion of the AZT, and was an out-and-back from the Camino Loma Alta trail head to the Pistol Hill trail head. Perfect weather conditions made for a really fun ride. Although the distance says 11.91 miles, the actual distance was closer to 15 miles. I had some issues with HAZ Tracks, and my phone didn't begin tracking until about 4.5 miles into the ride. A more accurate reading of the ride would be to simply double the distance from Pistol Hill Road back to the vehicles.

Just what the doctor ordered! I was looking for a fun, non-technical ride to re-acquaint myself with the joys of trail riding again. This ride delivered in spades. Great fun! And more importantly, I survived. I hope to be doing a lot more of these rides in the near future until I'm comfortable enough to tackle some of the more "look death in the eye" rides.

I used the opening of yet another Tucson microbrewery to experiment with a new waypoint creation strategy per Joe B's instructions. It worked!!!! Creating accurate waypoints is a two step process: hit the center icon first, then tap the waypoint icon. Voila, waypoints are positioned where they are supposed to be. Kudos to the website builder.

Took out one of these beauties,[ photo ], for my initial shakedown ride to familiarize myself with its new (to me) idiosyncrasies. I know you're all waiting with bated breath to find out if I made it home sans incident. The answer is a resounding "NO". I stumbled on to a pre-"soft-opening" of a future new addition to the ever expanding list of Tucson micro-breweries, the Public Brewhouse. SAMBA very much liked what he experienced. Here's hoping the Tucson bureaucracy is FINALLY done heaping additional barriers on the new brewery so it can open on its currently projected Aug. 1st opening date.

I began my ride with the sole purpose of biking enough miles to get my non-tubeless tires to seal properly on my tubeless rims with the use of a few oz's of Stan's Sealant. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but by the time I got to Grant Road I realized the folly of my plan. I knew I had enough air to get home, but I was a little loathe to waste a ride. It was at that moment I had an epiphany "Isn't that new brewery, 1912, due to open on July 4th located somewhere on Forbes Blvd.? Voila, with just a modicum of groping I did, in fact, find 1912, and in the process of my exploratory efforts stumbled onto the site of the Del Bac Distillery. So a $30, or so, investment in tasty, adult, malt beverages (at Che's, remember 1912 doesn't open until July 4th) convinced me my day's adventure was a resounding success.

Kudos are in order to SAMBA for his ground-breaking, FIRST complete circumnavigation of Tucson's proposed multi-user trail dubbed "The Loop", webcms.pima.gov/Use ... .pdf. Although the 90% or so of the proposed path that has been completed sees extensive traffic most every day, SAMBA is the first biker (user?) stupid enough to slog through the knee-deep sand of the Pantano Wash to complete The Loop as the planners intend.

The Tucson Mountain Biking community is all abuzz over plans to reroute one of the most popular, but hated (by biking neophytes, at least) trails in all of Tucson (Mountain Park). The reroute is intended to route cyclists around, rather than down the sandy, rocky monstrosity that is the Yetman Wash.

Given all the local palaver about the project, I figured all I'd need do would be to perform a simple Google search to find a record of the proposed new route. Au contraire! Search after countless searches yielded zero, zip, zilch, nada (how'd that get in here?) info about where the actual trail would run relative to the existing route which runs right IN the wash for a couple of miles. Rumor had it that some of Tucson's hiking & biking hierarchy had recently walked, and flagged the proposed route. So, given the dearth of REAL trail info, I figured who better than everyone's favorite HAZer, ME (SAMBA) (aka LaFong), to take his state-of-the-art Oregon 450t, and create one of OUR own. But, as my peripatetic digital record shows the flagging was more rumor than reality. There was flagging, but they were most definitely NOT obviously placed. I made a good faith effort, though, to bring you, my HAZ peeps, the most up-to-date digital record currently to be found on the Net, or any public place, for that matter.

If you decide to go to the SDMB Pint Night Yetman Wash Reroute Fundraiser, https://www.facebook.com/events/221923627975596/, feel free to say you know SAMBA (aka LaFong). Oh yeah, in lieu of kudos, feel free to buy SAMBA (aka LaFong) a pint or two to show your appreciation for the exemplary efforts he, and his state-of-the-art Oregon 450t put forth on YOUR behalf today.

"LaFong is hosting the first annual Cycling Born and Brewed event featuring Tucson beers as soon as he can raise a quorum (read that as "soon, very soon"). Local breweries by Nimbus, Ten Fifty-five, Barrio, Dragoon, Borderlands and Thunder Canyon will be visited.

The route will be posted on HikeArizona, com this weekend. Anyone who would care to join me on a pre-ride (and sampling?) should reply to this missive by early Saturday morning."

Due to the overwhelming interest generated by the post above I felt compelled to do an early, solo pre-ride of my planned weekend pre-ride (and sampling?).

P.S. Thank you MrBadBern for your inquiry.

Almost back by popular demand - there will soon be a new edition to SAMBA's Bike Pub Crawls. A couple of my dipsomaniacal peeps asked me to map out a new sot run. Never one to shrink from the awesome responsibility of said request, I pre-rode the route today to get an idea what kind of mileage and traffic we'd be contending with. With an eye toward safety I charted out a route that uses side streets, bike lanes, and officially designated bike routes whenever possible. The length of my proposed route, though, may prove to be a tad ambitious for some of my buddies to handle the entire Che's to Che's loop. But for those dumb enough to accept the challenge, they need only realize the operative word in the previous sentence is "proposed". We can always add to (yeah, right!) or subtract from the route to accommodate the fitness levels and , more importantly, the alcohol capacities of all crawlers.
