Another day in Paradise! 8) Had some extra time and what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Flagstaff than skiing near The Peaks?

I decided to cross-country ski out to and around Fern Mountain on the northern edge of Hart Prairie before the snow disappears. There's still a good 3~4' of settled snow in this area and the conditions are still good. Weather started out mostly sunny but is was snowing by the time I made it back to the trail head.

Popped out to take advantage of some fresh snow during my lunch break. This trail is nice because it's just down the street from my office and it's only about a mile or so from the trail head to the base of Mt. Elden. This makes it perfect for a "quickie" to either hike/bike/ski any time of year. It's also very quiet and peaceful and feels more remote than it really is. The whole Sandy Seep area climbs gradually up to the base of Mt Elden and offers some decent views of Elden and the cinder hills to the north.

Vegetation consist of mostly ponderosa pine, gamble oak, juniper and other small shrubs. The area is very open and "park-like" as a result of the Radio fire in '77 which denuded the entire East side of Elden, clearing out most of the big trees. There are still a lot of burnt pine snags throughout the area, mostly towards the base of the mountain. It's a good example of a recovering forest 30-years after a major fire. The satellite view of this area provides a striking indication of the before and after effects of the fire. See it here: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?source=s ... 93f615c3ce

A couple buddies and I decided to run down to Sedona for a little mountain biking as a change from all the skiing, snowshoeing (and shoveling) we've been doing in Flagstaff since December. It was great to be back on the bike and the weather was awsome; low 60's, sunny, almost no wind. It was like summer compared to Flag. One of my favorite things about Flagstaff in winter is that summer is only a 45-minute drive away :).

We parked at Bell Rock Plaza, thus avoiding the $10 fee for a Red Rock Pass (stoopid pass! : rambo : ). We started out from the Bell Rock TH http://hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=279 and headed north past Bell Rock. Missed the crossing under Hwy 179 that would take us to the Templeton Trail and ended up at the HT trail. Followed HT back to Templeton and rode around Cathedral Rock, ending up a Baldwins Crossing. From there it was a quick 5-mile ride down Verde Vally School Rd back to the parking lot.

Solo Ski from Fox Glen Park in East Flagstaff South to Fisher Point. Return route through Rio de Flag to Lone Tree Road in West Flagstaff.

Snow conditions consisted of 6~10" of fresh/slightly crusted powder over about 3' of settled base. This was two weeks after the 4-1/2 of snow Flagstaff received during the week of 1/23/10. Broke trail for almost the entire way (a little over six miles) as there were very few existing tracks to follow.

Weather was good for the most part. Partly cloudy, some flurries, temp around 40F with a light breeze. Was comfortable in just a base layer until heavy snow shower during last mile.

Actual route map can be viewed here: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=105114937096407379831.00047f19819158602ea68&z=13
