I decided to share this hike with with some of my coworkers, it is by far my favorite local summit. We had an original ten but only 6 made it to the meeting point in Mesa by 7 AM. So we went on, after we reached the four peaks turn off I was surprised to see the old atv parking lot is now a Cactus Nursery! After a few "Are we there yet's?" from the new hikers we finally reached the trailhead. On the way up I told my coworker Brandon about how many Tarantulas there were out here. He told me in ALL of his time ATV'ing that he had only seen one in the wild. Withing 100m of the trail head we saw our 1st!. The weather at the parking area was 52? and sunny. We made it to the saddle in about 2.5 hours, since we had some new hikers with us. At this point this is where we had one of the 6 stay behind where she later saw 3 more Tarantulas while there. From that point we headed up the steep hill where we left 2 more behind before the small down climb. That is where it got fun! I had two people with me who had never made the ascent before, but they did great! We reached the summit and took some pics before heading back down. Enjoy the pics!

Two friends of mine Brandon and Jon, decided that with a week off of work and it being spring and all that a nice hike was in order. I suggested Four Peaks more specifically Browns Peak. From the Valley everything looked manageable (snow wise). We set out on Sunday, as we came to the turn off for FR 143 ( Four Peaks Area ), we could see a lil snow on the summit, not too bad. Then again we had equipped ourselves for a spring hike. We all had boots, warm pants, and multiple jackets just in case weather came up, along with all the essentials like a multi-tool small tent, matches, ect. We got to the Trail Head and it was 46 according to the car Thermo, but a hand held thermo said 42 at 9AM. After unloading we set off, on the very end off the road up we had seen some frozen puddles of water in the shade, and a few small patches of snow, all were in the shade. Not too bad right..? About 1 KM in to our hike we found out that we were in for a long snow hike which quickly turned into realizing that this snow had not just fallen but had started to thaw and the re-freeze where people had stepped. We eventually made it to the saddle, with many falls on ice, or ever so quick falls in snow. Brandon and Jon were on their 1st summit attempt, this was my 3rd (1st in snow). Once we were at the saddle, I had to convince them that it was manageable. We treked forward. I was the 1st up to the small down climb, then had a rough time negotiating, the ice and snow. I have been on multiple ice/snow, hikes/climbs. As we progressed up the chute, I called off the hike, to Jon and Brandon down below. I might have been able to make it without crampons.. alot of the chute had snow melt run off from the top, which by night freezes into solid ice, but with 1st timers I didn't want to take the chance. One slip and it was a LONG slide down. So we hiked back. On the way back we encounterd alot of mud/slush which made for cold and wet feet. There were a few areas that I had a vinyl rain slicker that I wrapped around my waist and did a makeshift slide down. about 5.5 hours in total great hike!
