Went for a two night, three day backpacking trip in the Mazazal Wilderness 3/17-19. My friend and I started from the Barnhardt Trailhead and headed southwest to begin our Y-Bar Rock Creek loop hike around Mazatzal Peak. I hiked this exact route last year and lost the trail in several sections. I had similar problems again this year. Wildfires scored much of this area in 2004 and deadfall has covered the trail making route finding a challenge. The Mazazal Divide Trail (also a section of the Arizona Trail) from the intersection of the Brodie Trail and the Barnhardt Trail looks freshly maintained. The most difficult trail to find is the The Rock Creek Trail from Hopi Springs. This old and unmaintained trail is overgrown and climbing the brushy slope to the un-named saddle at 7,000' was not easy. The decent eastward was perfectly readable and on the lower slopes, orange trail markers are everywhere. There was plenty of water everywhere and all springs were flowing. The north facing slopes still have snow and water should be plentiful for several weeks.
