Hands down the best hike i have ever done. Very well marked trail and also very crowded if you don't go early enough. Watch out for rain in the afternoon. We stayed in Flagstaff the night before to get acclimated to the elevation and we needed it! At 4 am we headed to the trailhead. At about 5 am we started our trek. It was hailing out and a couple of hikers were already on there way down and one of them informed us that it was pretty nasty at the summit but we were determined to keep going. After about 2 hours of some pretty harsh hiking we reached the saddle and we could really begin to feel the change in elevation. At this point the weather was starting to calm down but it was getting pretty windy due to the elevation. I read about this hike months before we attempted it and all anyone talked about was the false summits which we experienced right after leaving the saddle. There must have been about 3 or 4 peaks that we thought were Humphreys only to find out we were wrong. About 20 minutes before we reached the summit it was extremely windy and cold and the elevation was taking its toll. Once we finally reached the summit it was worth everything. A true 360* view of Arizona and a feeling of being on top of the world (or state) was worth it all. As everyone who has done this trail knows, there is a box at the summit with paper in it so you can sign your name to claim that you made it. After writing our names and eating some lunch we decided to head back down. It was about 8:45 am and the trail was much more crowded and full of hikers asking if we had made it all the way. After a grueling trek back down we beat the infamous afternoon Flagstaff rain and felt as if we had accomplished something big. I would recommend this hike to anyone who likes challenging trails and doesn't mind the rain at times. Bring lots of water and snacks and make sure to wear worn in shoes.

Picacho Peak!!!! I love this hike for the simple fact that you get to climb on some old wooden planks and hold on for dear life to some old cables. I have done this trail twice now and would do it again in a heartbeat. I would however advise people to bring along a pear of gloves for the cables though. Its not impossible without but could help on the hands. When you start this hike you are staring straight up at the peak and wondering how long it could possible take to get there. It starts out pretty steep but is nice in the morning because the whole face of the mountain shades you, that is until you get to the saddle. Also, be careful in the summer because i have heard of a lot of hikers getting dehydrated fast on this trail. The saddle is a great place to rest and eat a snack because directly to your left is when the fun starts. You immediately start to go back down the other side while holding on to a cable that could be as old as the mountain. It tends to get backed up here because of beginners trying to walk down and hang on to the cable at the same time so just be patient and hold on. The rest of the way up to the summit is full of more climbing with cables and some gorgeous views of the other side of the mountain. Just before you summit there is a sort of small canyon where a steep climb with cables awaits (great time for the gloves). This is the most fun part in my opinion, until you come back down where you will have to use some clever footwork. The view is amazing from the top and this is probably my favorite hike outside of Humphreys simply because of its history and the cables and planks on the way to the top. There is another trail that is longer but less steep that hopefully i will get to someday.
