I have done this trail twice now and would do it again in a heartbeat. I would however advise people to bring along a pear of gloves for the cables though. Its not impossible without but could help on the hands. When you start this hike you are staring straight up at the peak and wondering how long it could possible take to get there. It starts out pretty steep but is nice in the morning because the whole face of the mountain shades you, that is until you get to the saddle. Also, be careful in the summer because i have heard of a lot of hikers getting dehydrated fast on this trail. The saddle is a great place to rest and eat a snack because directly to your left is when the fun starts. You immediately start to go back down the other side while holding on to a cable that could be as old as the mountain. It tends to get backed up here because of beginners trying to walk down and hang on to the cable at the same time so just be patient and hold on. The rest of the way up to the summit is full of more climbing with cables and some gorgeous views of the other side of the mountain. Just before you summit there is a sort of small canyon where a steep climb with cables awaits (great time for the gloves). This is the most fun part in my opinion, until you come back down where you will have to use some clever footwork. The view is amazing from the top and this is probably my favorite hike outside of Humphreys simply because of its history and the cables and planks on the way to the top. There is another trail that is longer but less steep that hopefully i will get to someday. |
