What gorgeous country!! I've always said that I never want to move from Az. and after this trip, who knows :0) I did Humphrey's Peak in Flagstaff a couple weeks before and had a tough time so I wasn't sure what to expect from this hike. I prepared much better for this one (i.e. actually going to sleep the night before) and made sure I was hydrated. I also went up the day before to get a little acclimated to the altitude. Because it was a quick trip, I just brought a couple sleeping bags and pillows and just slept out near the river that is close to the trail. I can't remember a better night's sleep out "camping".

Got a 6:00 start and there were about 10 other cars in the parking lot. In all, I think I ran into 30 or so other hikers the whole day. The trail was very well marked and the views were the best I've seen. Mt. Massive to the N. was also very impressive captured my attention the whole day. It was quite a thrill to work up the mountain and notice late in the climb that I was climbing above it's peak.

I was very surprised to see some very large spiders up that high as well as some beautiful ground flowers. There was a medium sized bird that was up over 13,000 feet that I thought was brillant :) I can't imagine any coyotes coming up that high after him and he was making quite a living on the easy pickins of bugs and spiders. You could tell that he was used to seeing us strange folks with boots and poles. Smart darn bird :0)

This was my first 14'er and left me wanting more! I spoke with a more "mature" group on the way down and remember telling them, "What a privilege to be be able to stand on top of this mountain." It was one of those times where you hear your own words after they come out of your mouth. My memory of Mt. Elbert will be just that.... What a privilege it was to climb. Can't wait to visit Co. again soon. I think I'll bring my fly rod next time to take advantage of the streams/rivers.
