I was amazed to see a fair amount of poison ivy and poison oak on the first section of the trail; I didn't know that stuff grew out here! I really enjoyed walking across that first bench area. It reminds me a little of our balds in the southern Appalachians -- a lovely meadow with nice wildflowers and long views of the surrounding hills. It looked as if some tread work had been done recently on the section between the first bench and the summit. With the exception of some overgrown spots at the beginning, this trail, like all I hiked in northern Arizona, was extremely well-constructed and well-maintained. Y'all are lucky to have such nice trails. After the long, sad walk across the upper mesa, the views from the north overlook were typical mind-altering Sedona. |
