This is a nice short hike along the east side of the Sierra Prieta ridge/mountains. Good views of the Prescott basin, Granite Mountain, Thumbe Butte and in the distance the Bradshaws and Mingus mountains.
Good hike when you only have an hour.
Went up Copper Basin Road. From the 4-way stop, just before getting into the ponderosas, go 2.3 miles and there is an area for parking. Across the road form the parking is Trail 48. Trail 393 starts right at the lot.
This trail ends in a canyon and morphs into Trail 327. As it's part of the circle trail possible to go on to Thumb Butte from that junction. That would be a much longer hike.
First part of Trail 393 goes up a ravine a couple hundred feet and doesn't have any big altitude change until the last quarter of the hike.

This trail is all about going up 700+ feet using a steep, and at times rocky, trail. Very few switchbacks.
At the top one can go left to Mount Tritle or right to go up Mount Maverick or points beyond. The view from the top and walking along the ridge looks far to the north, as far as seeing the peaks outside Flagstaff and on the other side to the mountains around Yarnel, end of Bradshaws.
Go up Senator Highway..go past where the pavement ends (Y Camp) a short ways and turn onto Mt Tirtle road. This road is past the right hand turn for Wolf Creek Campground.
Then on Mt Tirtle (named after a former governor of the state) go past the left turn for Whispering Pines Camp. You will pass a number of Forest Service campground setups. Bare to the right at the next y. Then there will be a concrete pad that goes across a creek. Bear to the left, don't go right after crossing the creek, which is probably dry. Within a short distance there will be a right turn for Camp Kendall. (sign is full of bullet holes) Go up this road to you see a wooden pole corral fence. Inside of the fence is the homestead named Camp Kendall. All that remains is a few orchard trees.
Good place to park unless you have a good four-wheel drive. Follow the Trail 65 signs and start climbing.
Don't forget a lot of water to replace what is lost in the ascent.

Ate at the Cliff Dwellers stop. Great food. Just around the corner is a side canyon with a Honeymoon Trail sign. Go up this side canyon about 1.5 miles and you will find a waterfall with springs on the side of the canyon wall. Look hard and you will find petrified wood. An old cabin made of sandstone is about third mile in.
