At the top one can go left to Mount Tritle or right to go up Mount Maverick or points beyond. The view from the top and walking along the ridge looks far to the north, as far as seeing the peaks outside Flagstaff and on the other side to the mountains around Yarnel, end of Bradshaws.
Go up Senator Highway..go past where the pavement ends (Y Camp) a short ways and turn onto Mt Tirtle road. This road is past the right hand turn for Wolf Creek Campground.
Then on Mt Tirtle (named after a former governor of the state) go past the left turn for Whispering Pines Camp. You will pass a number of Forest Service campground setups. Bare to the right at the next y. Then there will be a concrete pad that goes across a creek. Bear to the left, don't go right after crossing the creek, which is probably dry. Within a short distance there will be a right turn for Camp Kendall. (sign is full of bullet holes) Go up this road to you see a wooden pole corral fence. Inside of the fence is the homestead named Camp Kendall. All that remains is a few orchard trees.
Good place to park unless you have a good four-wheel drive. Follow the Trail 65 signs and start climbing.
Don't forget a lot of water to replace what is lost in the ascent. |
