Took a field trip with my Anthropology class this morning. What a beautiful day. It was pretty windy, but it was super fun. It was just a short little hike, but there is so much to see and learn about the crater. The best part was being able to see the different lava flows. Also, if you're in the area, I recommend visiting the Wipatke dwelling. It's about a 20 minute drive from the crater, and is definitely worth seeing.

My advice: Bring an extra pair of lungs. Hahaha. But no seriously, bring water. I brought 2 liters, and it definitely was not enough. It lasted until about halfway down, but I made it! We got all the way to the top, and I do believe it was from sheer stubbornness. I would recommend actually being in shape for that. But it was a really amazing hike. So beautiful!

Hiked this trail with one of my professors and a few classmates. It was the perfect easygoing trail. We parked at the Maverik on W 66 and walked through the neighborhood to the trail. It's really cool if you like trains because the first part is walking through a tunnel under the tracks. It gets pretty steep for a little bit to get on top of the mesa, but after that it's just a flat loop. Great views of Flagstaff, and early in the morning there weren't many people there. Also, we found a tree swing not far off the trail so keep an eye out. Fun easy hike.

This was a really fun hike. It was pretty easy going. There were some areas you had to crawl, but that just made it all the more fun. I would recommend a jacket since it's pretty cold in the cave, but once we got farther in, we ended up tying them around our waists. Definitely wear sturdy shoes. I only had on Nikes and it was rough. Even my friend with hiking boots hurt her ankle, so be sure to watch for slippery/uneven rocks. That said, this hike is so cool especially if you have any interest in geology. You can see the way the lava moved to form the tunnels, and everything from the rock walls to the dust beneath your feet (actually ash) came from the volcano. Also, bring Wint-O-Green Lifesavers (just of course don't leave any wrappers). This is such a cool experiment. Once you get to the back of the tunnel, turn off your lights. It is so dark that when you chew on the mint, you can see sparks (probably have to watch someone else do it though unless you are incredibly flexible). Anyways, have fun!
