I don't know, but I do now know after completing it, that I'm not good at 13ml R/T hikes with a heavy daypack and two UPHILLS like this one going OUT(1st was +1175' for 2mls & the 2nd was +500' for 2mls) !
Four of us had grand visions this day of visiting this remote area of the Salome Wilderness to hike in to view a known major waterfall at the convergence/intersection of Workman's Creek and Salome Creek(about 1/3ml from the actual HELL'S HOLE area). It was a nice weather day for a 2.5hr drive to the Reynolds TH from our east Phx area. We started hiking at 9:30am, passed the private land area of nicely shaded Armor Ranch and reached the 1st water crossing at Workman's/Reynolds Creek 2mls in at around 10:25am. A significant amount of this hike is in & out of the ponderosa pines and oaks until you pass the trails highpoint(5478')intersection of Boyer Cabin Tr#148/Hell's Hole Tr#284 at 3.2mls in. The distant canyon views were much better from this point on after another .3mls as you start to descend(-1100') on numerous switchbacks, with some overgrowth, over the next 2mls(at 5.2mls in) to a red granite lower canyon bottom where once again you meet Workman's Creek as it flows west to meet the confluence of Salome Creek(with Hell's Hole being another ~1/3ml upstream-Salome Creek from this confluence/intersection). At ~5.6mls in, after passing some backpack camping spots, you reach the first significant waterfall, a "photo moment three-tiered one" (see Steve's Jan'08 trip pic: http://hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=54517 ). From this point on, the hiking trail pretty much ends with only random cairns continuing...your ability, agility, desire to rock/boulder hop, view more significant waterfalls, pink granite pools, and route finding skills only, will take you much further west from this point. We took a 30min lunch break, talked it over, and decided to continue to try and make it to the "confluence/intersection" of Workman's Creek/Salome Creek to see that known, major waterfall. After another 1.5hrs of hiking(ie- serious bushwhacking & route finding) at 2:30pm and ~6.6mls in, we decided to call it quits.. We could see the intersection in the distance and we were within 1/4ml of it, but it was just not to be for us, this day. Good thing too, because I was the last one out at 7:05pm and it was night at 7:15pm. |
