Directions: South on I-10. East on Riggs Rd until you can't go any further (17 miles). South on Ellsworth Rd, curving left onto Hunt Hwy. First right after cone-shaped hill. South on Thompson Rd. Continue past main park entrance (Phillips Rd). Continue ~4 miles further south on Brenner Pass Rd to Rock Peak Wash trailhead. This is a good place to start, as no one else will be there. Fee is $6; use an envelope as there is no ranger.

Time out: 9:30 a.m. Weather: Heavy overcast, threatening rain, breezy, mid 60s. Hiked 1.3 km north in wide, very sandy wash. Don't wander off. Very gentle climb from here to saddle. Turn west on San Tan Trail (SA), 900m to next junction. Continue north on San Tan Trail, 1.1 km to next junction. Continue west on San Tan Trail, 200m to next junction. Continue north on San Tan Trail, about 600m to saddle. (Just above the [SA] on the map.) As you face northwest, you can see most of the Valley of the Sun. Turn around, facing southeast and you can see all the way to Florence. Pretty cool! Begin very gentle descent. Continue north on San Tan Trail, 1.2km to next junction. Turn east on Moonlight Trail (ML), 1.3 km to main parking (very crowded) to meet your shuttle/pickup. Other than the wash, remainder of trail is hard, smooth surface. Not many people until Moonlight Trail, but plenty of horses (and their droppings). No cacti or critters to worry about. Time In: 11:15 a.m. Duration: 1h 45m. Hike time, minus breaks: 1h 40m. Distance: 7.5 km. Pace: 4.49 km/h. |
