Report

Time out: 10:10 a.m. Weather: Sunny, low 60s, but felt colder. Head east on National Trail immediately dips into narrow valley, followed by a short, moderately steep climb. Trail is very narrow at to top of ridge line, but widens out the rest of the way. Begin gentle 2.1 km descent to Fat Man's Pass. (A roughly 9-inch wide crevice through the rocks.) Very heavy foot and bike traffic in this area. The Mad Hiker recommends approaching from the opposite direction, for easier trail finding, but I went clockwise so I could face, and avoid, the mountain bike traffic. Turn north at the pass, staying on National Trail 700m to Mormon Trail junction. Turn east, 300m to next junction. Turn south into Hidden Valley. Lots of shade, and close brush in there. Plus big rock formations where you can wander around without trampling the desert flora. Some light scrambling is required. 700m south to Fat Man's Pass. Squeeze through, then return slightly uphill 2.1 km to narrow valley, then 300m to trailhead. Time In: 12:20 a.m. Duration: 2h 10m. Hike time, minus breaks: 1h 45m. Distance: 7.1 km. Pace: 4.07 km/h. (It's actually faster, but I hurt my knee in our Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl ...)
