A few days prior to this I hiked the Twenty Mile Lava Trail in the northern portion of Hell's Half Acre. The southern tip of this massive lava field is crossed by Interstate 15 between Blackfoot and Idaho Falls. Rest areas have been placed on both sides of the freeway to allow the casual traveler to experience the lava fields. I only did the trail at the northbound rest area. The trail is composed of three very short loops that total about one mile. Doing the southbound trail would require drving to the next exit and circling back. There's no way to cross the interstate without darting across traffic. I figured the interpretive signs and scenery on these short, paved trails would be identical, so I was content with just a brief stop.
