Wild Horse Pass - Interpretive Trail, AZ

A two and a half mile Interpretive Trail which runs alongside the Resort's replication of the storied Gila River.


More than fifty signs detailing the culture, history, and plant life of the Gila River Indian Community can be found along the trail. More than half of the signs focus on the vegetation that is of historical significance to the Pima and Maricopa People. Each sign, named in both the Pima and English languages, features each plant's picture and denotes what it was used for and its significance to the Gila River People. The remaining signs detail facts about the surrounding area, such as the history of Pima Cotton and facts about the Pima and Maricopa languages."This new trail adds another cultural element to the Resort, which will provide each guest a tangible experience of the Gila River Indian Community and its rich history," said Ginger Sunbird Martin, the Resort's Cultural Concierge. The Interpretive Trail construction was a three-year process involving in-depth research of the Gila River Indian Communities' history and heritage. The signs were designed and produced by Equity Sign Group. Simultaneously, the project was overseen by the Tribes Cultural Committee, who had ample input in the cultural spellings and information included. The Interpretive Trail is not only an added feature for Resort guests; it is a significant resource for our new Kids Club. The children will be out scouring the trail for bugs and taking guided tours with Resort staff.

Admission to the trail is free, while we do recommend that walkers wear closed-toe shoes and bring bottled water. The Interpretive Trail is intended for daylight use only as the trail is not lit.
