| no partners | | I spotted the smoke while cutting wood at my friends house on Bern St in east Flag at 1:30 PM or so. It was already large and growing quickly with high winds. I left to go home to close windows, if the fire was SW of my place, at 2:30 PM. I could see from I-40 that the Hardy Fire was due south of the Rio De Flag over pass on 40 and heading for Butler Ave very fast.
I got home and started splitting oak wood for a fire if I go camping soon. Once I started seeing bombers and other planes flying over my apartment I knew the show had started. I headed out with my camera and started shooting. I took some near my place and in some town homes east of me before I crossed under the highway in a culvert and passed by the Rio De Flag recharge pond by I-40. I crested the ridge due south of the Rio and passed through the APS ROW. At that time the first surfactant drop was made. I missed capturing it, but I was very close to the fire perimeter and pushed on. I came upon a transient (bum) camp just 200 feet from this surfactant drop. I paralleled the fire line and dropped down to the Rio Valley. There, a Dozer crew was sitting and fire was heading towards the Rio. I crossed the Rio (it's dry) and climbed the ground north of it. The HeliTak chopper was circling around and dropping water on piles and around spot fires that had started northeast of the Rio Valley. I went a little further NE before turning back to the Rio and crossing the Rio to hike back up on the APS ROW. It was a dam good thing I did, too, because from here I got some video of another surfactant drop which was right over where I had been a few minutes before.
The drops ended, I recrossed the Rio and headed towards Little America. Some FS guys were plowing a dozer line near the Interstate. I hung out there before heading home.
