I planned a take out at Hite, checked on it as I drove north, unimpressed with the weak river flow and huge mud flats. I located a good spot and continued north on Hwy 95. I cached a gallon of water in the culvert at Poison Springs Canyon road, the only vehicle access in about 75 miles of this river.
I put in out of Hanksville, packed as light as I could taking a backpack with all items drybagged and a second dry bag with hiking shoes and clean hitchhiking clothes, my mode of transport back to my car.
The first two days consisted of lots of dragging and guiding the kayak versus paddling. I did float some under grand sandstone walls. I camped every night on white sand beaches. It was beautiful and wonderful solitude, I didn't see another soul.
The third day I actually spent more time paddling. I stopped to explore a large sidecanyon for a day. Then I ran into lots of rocky, faster sections of the river with mini rapids. That was fun. I was last in a canoe about 25 years ago and had 30 min of practice on the Salt prior to this trip.
The scenery from Twin Corral Box canyon to Happy Canyon was exceptional; world class.
I would like to return to backpack or float this with more water to do more exploring. I had allotted 6 days for this trip, it was not enough.
I ended up bailing out on the 5th day at Poison Springs Canyon to hike out. However a kind older couple part of an ATV group took me to their camp, and their friends hauled my boat. They gave me a ride to Hanksville and to my car. They refused my offer of money for gas---such kind and nice people.
It was a unique and special trip for me. One I will always remember. |
