Had to circumvent large patches of scrub oak and rock outcroppings on Antelope's west side to get up to the ridge. Worst obstacle was the barbwire fence. Took about 15 minutes to find a place to crawl under it. Wires too tight to spread. From the ridge, I headed up a steady incline to the top.
View from the 5,763' summit was magnificent. Looked down on the stone ruins atop Rich Hill and the ghost town of Stanton. Light breeze blowing up here on the rocky cliff face. Very sudden drop-off, hundreds of feet if not a thousand or so. Saw no trail, no human all day. No sound except for my feet stumbling over rock and the "caw" of a crow in a tree. Saw some round pellets, rabbit scat I assumed. Walked along the ledge east to west. Very flat. GPS measured a variance of only six feet. Scattered juniper and cedar. Did see one pinyon pine and of course lots of chaparral.
As I walked back away from the ledge, I came across an old campsite. Someone had built a lean-to up against a large alligator juniper. Nicely-cut poles layed against the tree and the remains of a blue tarp were scattered at the base. I figured someone had made a home here in the last 5-10 years. A rock cairn was not far away, to the west maybe 100 yards, atop a boulder.
Foolishly took another way down. I tried to short-cut Antelope's west side, and ran into numerous old rock slides. Tried to cross them carefully but fell hard once. Luckly caught my self without pitching head first into serious injury. Should've taken a more northerly route from the top and avoided this area.
Also made the mistake of by-passing my route up. I came down on the west side of a deep ravine and found the going not only steeper but rockier. And, again, the barbwire fence. Finally reached the car about 3 o'clock. As difficult as it was, I'd eagerly make this trek again. Maybe next time in wildflower season. |
