I ended up lacking time, so I turned around at the Malicious Gap Road turnoff, and decided to revisit McFadden Horse. Hiking up was hot and humid, with no air movement whatsoever. A deluge of sweat mixed with sunscreen burned my eyes. On top, I saw Hank's signature in the register (I think I know that guy ), and added my own to the little mustard jar. I had not made it as far as Elephant Rock on my first hike several years back, so this hike had something new for me. What a view! And there was the Elephant Rock Fortress ruin in plain sight. Returning, the sun set as I dropped over the west rim of the mountain, and I got back to my truck at dark. The icing on the cake was a night time drive through the Sierra Ancha, something I've done countless times and never tire of. Could not have been a more perfect day! |
