| no partners | | Party of 7 consisting of 2 experienced + 5 novice. We did the North Fork parking near the bridge just west of Vermillion Cliffs motel. We did 3 rappels, skipped the first anchor which had an easy down climb on the right. The rappels were perfect for teaching novices, each subsequent rap added an element (first was 35ft starting from a huge ledge, then 75ft and steeper into a narrow notch, finally a 25ft free rap.)
It took us about 2hours to descend, the remainder of the time was spent on the exit. We did the upstream exit as is recommended in the guide: Grand Canyoneering. It is a long way to travel on loose talus (2+miles) then zaging back another 0.5mile til a cliff break allows access to the rim (we ended up doing a short bit of easy 5th class) Travel close to the river is difficult due to thick tamarisk. The trail is not well cairned and mostly consists of just a sheep path. |
