I was really looking forward to this hike, having not previously hiked the Canyon to date. I know these were some great trails to start off with, but I would have been trilled to go anywhere. It was basically Grand Canyon 101 ~~And with two other Awesome Outdoor Friends who had not yet hiked inside this Grand Crevasse. While we had all been to the canyon before previously, none of us had hiked inside its walls.
We headed up to Flagstaff from Phoenix on Saturday nite, and crashed at a friends house. Next morning I woke up to loud yawns that were audible from even the other room. Yays for 5:30 wake up call:D Dang Liz and Joey were super morning people that day:)~!! I am suffering from a lack of sleep due to back pain but still was going to push myself to do the hike this day. *
I think we got to the trail head around 10:30, after stopping off for supplies and getting sandwiches from the amazing Safeway Sandwich maker.
Crampons would have come in handy due to ice on the downhill trail at the top. I managed not to fall on this part of the trip. I think we got to the Tonto Trail around 12:30 when we stopped to eat and observe a friendly squirrel who wanted to sit in our laps and eat our lunches.
I loved this stretch of Tonto Trail here. Never mind that it was the only one without switchbacks :) it was beautiful. I was a bit lethargic on this part of the stretch and we were pushing trying to get to the Bright Angel trail as soon as possible to minimize the nighttime on our hike. Though I'm not sure when exactly we got to the last trail, we were half way up the ascent when it was full twilight. Snow in the moonlight is super beautiful, although a bit treacherous. ~~I'm grateful that we had trekking poles to lean on but I still completely managed to slip on the ice more than a couple times and fell full body onto the black ice just yards away from the top, HA!
We were back at the car around 7:30. And for the record I have never ever been as tired and sore from a hike before. More Grand Canyon please. Maybe I will go up there and get a job...
( Pics forthcoming...)
