It started raining off and on yesterday starting around noon. This morning the blustery weather stepped up a notch.  I suspected there may not be a ranger-guided hike to Rockwell Falls at Two Medicine.  I tried a new MRE for breakfast, strawberry granola with cold water; it was delightful. I did go get a coffee at the KOA.

As usual, on my drive I would stop for pictures; especially back toward the St Mary Lake Valley which was engulfed with the colorful cold and windy and wet weather.  They are still working on the highway so traffic was stopped for a while and then we had to follow a pilot car for several miles.  I think they are expecting to finally finish it this year; Obviously a short season for  construction. I finally headed up Highway 49, Looking Glass Road and as usual it didn't disappoint; a rough son of a gun but I like driving it.  The weather continued to worsen and the temp dropped to the mid 40s.  And looking up the Two Medicine Valley it was pretty socked in.

I stopped at the Ranger Station to see if they were going to do the hike. Ranger Hagan said, "don't I know you?" And I told him I was on the same hike with him ten years ago.  He said he wasn't sure about the hike but to wait at the boat dock.  The weather hadn't improved so this desert lizard would have to pass on the hike. Two others did go.
I went to the Two Medicine store to get some coffee to warm me up.  Why this dude I didn't know decided he should bring his bottle of wine and sit at my small table is beyond me; one of the weirdest experiences I've ever had. After about ten minutes of that I bid him goodbye and went to get my two 6-packs of Huck It.  Last summer I couldn't find it anywhere and this year it's everywhere.

Oh ya, the hike.  They have made quite a few changes to the trail including paving the path to the river Bank. There is also new signage that includes a nature trail.  The weather still had not improved.  As you get closer to the river you can hear the roar of the Falls. I made my way across the bridge and over toward where you had a better view of the Falls.  I walked a little further and then headed east along a use path until it was thick with aspens and turned around.  There were quite a few wildflowers on both sides of the river so I wandered for a bit before heading back on the main path.

I did do the nature trail but got off on one of the side use trails as I saw a nice smattering of wildflowers closer to the river.  There was this most intensely bright green moss on some of the rocks in the river; I don't recall ever seeing that before. Eventually I couldn't get any further and saw a narrow but thick with flora path to cross over.  Well that was a mistake as I got pretty wet.
I always enjoy this little hike and now I had time to burn. The place I planned for lunch was closed on Tuesdays so I ended up at Two Medicine Grill Diner, had homemade soup and onion rings, and read the week old paper.  Interestingly I found out there is a half-marathon they run on Looking Glass Road, how beautiful of a run that would be!

I ended up at Glacier Park Lodge to kill more time; it was also still lightly raining. After buying some Huckleberry chocolate stuff, I sat  near the big fireplace and did some texting.  Then I walked and filmed the very long garden as there was a break in the weather.  The garden was not in the best of shape, lots of grass which is such a shame. The gardener was out there but seemed to be mostly talking rather than weeding.

On my way to the motel I picked up a thru-hiker as I saw he had a resupply box (that box was heavy) and wearing a backpack.  Come to find out he's on the last leg of his triple crown and would be heading to the Bob Marshall Wilderness toward Lincoln.  I dropped him at Brownies where other hikers recognized him.  I would actually come back over to Brownies, it's just down the road from where I was staying, and visit with him for a bit as I had picked up some things to eat.

Tomorrow it's off to Chester to meet up with Cousin Connie, lunch and a museum before heading to the ranch.  Fortunately she's willing to let me stay a few days early.

This was our other choice to hike in light of NOT being on our Gunsight Lake backpack and hiking up to Jackson Glacier and/or Gunsight Pass. It had rained most of the nite so we were grateful to have our small room at St Mary Lodge. It was still raining off and on in the AM but we thot we would give the Two Medicine Valley a look-see; even if we just hung out at the Lodge there (a store now). When we started our drive, this didn't look good either as our visibility was extremely limited but we continued on in spite of driving in clouds off and on.

As we got above Lower Two Medicine Lake, there seemed to be an opening and only low clouds giving us hope we would get to do some hiking around Two Medicine Lake. We got to the parking area and were able to find a spot. We had a nice lunch at the store including a great tomato soup and we split a sandwich.

The weather was foreboding so we decided to stick close to the lake area. We headed toward Pray Lake and walked around for .75 miles according to my watch. The clouds stayed low but I was able to get some pictures of the flora and a couple waterfalls were visible. There were some trees that had thick layers of moss on their branches that were showing very brightly in this light.

On our way out of the area, we decided to stop and see if Ranger Pat Hagen was about so we stopped at the Ranger Station. (I had done two hikes with him in 2013 and 2014 so it was a bit ago; oh and Wendy and I saw him in 2018 coming back from Upper Two Medicine Lake) He was there and came out to meet us. He remembered Tina but not me :( . Nonetheless, we had a nice conversation before others started coming up and asking questions so we left.

There were only a couple parking spots left at the Running Eagle/Trick Falls hike TH. The main entrance was closed off for some reason so you had to go a little past there to get into the hiking area. We got to the Falls fairly quickly. Only the lower Falls was flowing. On the way back we decided to stay close to the River which was a good decision :) as we were rewarded with lots of late blooming flowers and watching a group of American Dippers; apparently training the younger ones to hop the river (according to a bird watcher we encountered). They are noisy but I did get some good video of them as they moved up the river.

Temp was 51.7 degrees and 94% humidity with rain shower (we didn't get any though) finishing at 2:23PM (not sure where google was getting the weather from but it would have been St Mary or Browning.)

We were lucky to have good weather for both of those little hikes. The sky had lots of puffy clouds as we made our drive back to St Mary so we got to see the prairie and the lake. However, about an hour later the rain started coming and going. We checked into our room at Red Eagle Motel (nice place but stay upstairs as the walls and floors are thin).

Next up: Cattle Baron Supper Club, we hoped... as they had a water issue in Babb and we weren't sure if it would be resolved but according to their FB page, it was a go. However, when we got there, they weren't open yet as they were still waiting for the water pressure to come up. So we waited in the car for awhile and eventually got in line to go in once we got the thumbs up from one of the employees.

While waiting in line for about 20 minutes I talked to a Blackfeet about how to pronounce Piegan among other things including how covid had effected the reservation. She was a teacher and her husband who normally does construction was doing horse-work for a guiding company. They had a reservation for 11 including her parents, children and a cousin. She told me what to order, Bob's Specialty, and fortunately, I got my order in before their group ordered  . The food was superb as always. I don't know what they cook those steaks on or in but the flavor is awesome.

Day Two started out with the best breakfast EVER! Huckleberry Bread-Pudding Cinnamon French Toast :y: with huckleberry syrup and bacon. If I ever have a last meal, that would be my request.
Next, to pay the Izaak Walton Inn bill where I got an additional 10% off via my Glacier Conservancy coupons which I would forget to use the rest of the trip ](*,) . I also explained to the morning desk staff about the fiasco with the bear spray and that the afternoon desk staff were a little on the rude side.

So it was off to Two Medicine to pick up our permit. It was in another person's name but all the ranger wants is the permit number and your credit card for the $40 balance. And then you have to watch the video about hiking in Glacier Park. I know we learned something new but I forgot already. I do have a question though, I wonder how the bears feel about us putting up the party lights? I thot it would make me instant bear bait  so I decided not to display them. Oh, we gave my bear spray for the ranger to give to someone as I wasn't going to ship it back since I wouldn't be home to collect it in a timely manner.

As long as we were here and had time to kill, we went down to the lake. It's so beautiful. Next we went to the Two Medicine store to pick up a sandwich and chips to split for our little hike at Running Eagle Falls (Trick Falls) Trail that we had last hiked in 2011. We loaded up our lunch and headed out on this short trail to the creek and falls. This time, there was a bridge to get across the creek where in 2011, the water was running higher and there was no bridge. And this time, no trick either; first time I've seen only the lower falls flowing. It's still a pretty falls and I took the requisite pictures and video. There were a couple fly fishers below the falls so that was kind of cool.

We walked back past the bridge and up the creek a bit to have our lunch on the Dry Fork that flows into Two Medicine Creek. We realized we didn't have bear spray with us but we felt there was enough human activity around that we would be good. We watched a sandpiper across the way on the rocks in the creek as he walked around. It was a nice start to our time in Glacier National Park.

We headed back to Brownies Hostel in E Glacier, not where I thot it was. While they are noted for their bakery, the hostel not so much altho thru-hikers seem to use it a lot. I later realized I thot I was booking the Backpackers Inn which is what I would do next time. And now it was time to sort through all of the things we had and what to bring for our four-day backpack.

Next we took a walk about 1/2 mile to the East Glacier Park Lodge to check out the garden and have a cocktail. I was surprised how unkempt the garden was, full of tall grass. As we progressed further you could see they had been attacking this grass problem. They did have record snowfall (6.5 feet in Feb. alone, a record and a total 284 inches of snow since fall 2017, their second snowiest season-to-date) but I'm not sure if that was the reason why for the tall grass invasion. Anyway, they still had some fabulous flora but not to the level I've seen previously.

It was Christmas in July at the hotel so that was a bit weird. We walked around the lobby and eventually made our way to the Empire Lounge. I ordered a huckleberry mimosa and I'm not sure what Wendy had. We took our drinks out to the back veranda to enjoy the beauty of the southern mountains of Glacier National Park. Wendy got her peakfinder app out and it works wonderfully in identifying the peaks we were looking at. The peakfinder app would be all the rage everywhere we went with other people.

Finally it was time for dinner at the Whistle Stop Cafe right next to Brownies Hostel. After going thru more of a window than a door we sat outside at one of the picnic tables that you have to share. I ordered some ribs that were pretty tasty and a beer I never got. As we were half-way through, it hit. Hail yes! so inside we all dashed carrying our food. We were lucky there was a side table we could sit at and try to finish our food. It hailed and rained so much the roof above the cash register started leaking so out came the plastic cover. The owner was also dashing out to grab all the paper towel holders that served as napkins but I think he was too late. Anyway, I have pictures and video of this hailacious event. The hail stuck around for awhile and in fact, we would see some of it at our campsite the next day; that's how sticky it was.

Second hike of the day after the Rockwell Falls hike. But before getting there I had to stop on a corner of the road as it was loaded with wildflowers with Indian Paintbrush being the highlight. There was another elderly person using one of those tablets to take pictures of the abundant wildflower scene. I take such great delight in watching others embibe in the beauty of the park. The husband patiently waited in the car.

I hadn't done this hike since 2011 with Wendy and Gary so thot it was time for a quick re-visit. THIS time there was a small foot bridge :) you could use to cross the river. This meant I could get up close and personal with Twin Falls (Running Eagle). Of course as you come in on the wheelchair friendly trail toward the falls, I could see it was running in its twin state and fast and furious. I stood up on one of the viewing benches to get a picture before heading out on the beach.

It was fun to cross the bridge over the fast running water filled with beautiful GNP colored rocks. You proceed on the north side until you come to a :o viewing platform... well that is certainly new but how nice. There was a family frolicking just below the falls in the shallow water. There is an off-trail that continues up toward the falls. It doesn't get quite high enough to see the water flowing from the top and it is quite steep, especially coming down.

It was an overcast and windy day. The overcast helped with taking pics of several different flora on my hike back. Fortunately the residual smoke from all the fires of WA, OR and BC didn't interfere with this hike; altho I still couldn't smell Glacier Park as it still smelled smokey :( . There were a few other souls coming and going but it was still peaceful. I think this hike should always be a "must do" if you're over in the Two Medicine Valley. There is also a nature interpretive trail but I was hungry so it was time to head over for dinner at the infamous Two Sisters outside of Babb, MT.

FYI - Two Sisters lived up to its reputation  . I sat at the counter as it was packed. I couldn't decide what to eat so I had a cup of Big John's Chili with cheese and crunchy pita chips (the chips were great with the chili) and onion rings. There were so many crispy/tender onion rings I only ate half the basket but of course, the highlight was the huckleberry pie (however I was too full so had it for breakfast the next day). I watched these local chefs work in very tight confines putting out some of the best looking food. I spoke with the owner about other items on her menu as they were different like a raspberry/rhubarb pie and a huckleberry aioli that they used on their steak.

Day 2, Jul 22 Two Medicine Day - Part 1
- weather started out bad and wasn't projected to get any better so today we would be mostly driving. So after a breakfast of Costco granola with "homemade by Wendy" :) yummy yogurt, making sandwiches and a visit by some deer :D at the campsite it was off to the Two Medicine area and Glacier Park Lodge via the Kiowa Loop http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montana_Highway_49.

- We did stop before getting to Montana Hiway 49 to get some pictures of some horses grazing below us with the Rocky Mountains in the background. It would have been nice to be a little closer to the horses. Unknown to us, this would happen later that afternoon when we drove to the Cut Bank TH.

-The Loop is actually a windy, narrow and rough highway with a 21 ft vehicle limit that is quite scenic and a short-cut of sorts to East Glacier. I love this road because of the view of the plains as they turn into mountains 8) . We stopped at a turn out where we could make out two large crosses thinking they were probably for road fatalities but in fact, that was not the case. Instead it was a memorial to two members of the Blackfeet Reservation which borders Glacier Park. The weather got really nasty up on the bluff but you could see Upper Two Medicine and Two Medicine Lake from here as well as the mountains to the West.

Video (Campground deer, drive on Kiowa Loop and to Two Medicine): http://youtu.be/uycvOk4pv_8

-We arrived at the TH and fortunately the weather was still holding. It wasn't too crowded so that was good. Off we went on the very nice trail through bushes of thimbleberry and other assorted flora, some of which was labeled. Before you know it you are at Two Medicine River and can see that the Falls is definitely in "Trick" mode http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Glacier_Running_Eagle_Falls_pan.jpg. However, you have to know what the "Trick" is ;) which was almost hard to do this time because there was SO MUCH water coming over.

We walked down the river a bit and hung out for awhile before making our way back to be directly across from the Falls. In drier years, you can get across the river and walk up closer to the Falls but not this time as the river was running high and fast. As we walked around the bend you got another view of the falls and a side pool/pond of water that had been created by nature :FG: to accomodate the volume of water this year. It presented some nice photo ops. Right behind this view was a camera for a bat research project.

I persuaded Wendy and Gary not to take the normal path back but to walk along the river a little ways and then back to the trail before coming out by the bridge. We encountered a fisherman along the river in his wading gear so that was a bit of a surprise. We were lucky that the weather held for most of our time out on this nature walk.
Video at Running Eagle/Trick Falls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pL82qY0yobs

-The weather would not hold for the remaining part of this part of our trip in the Two Medicine area. We arrived at Lower Two Medicine Lake to a crowded parking lot and rain and wind and cold. We decided to hang out at the Gift Shop/Camp Store (in what was once a Chalet in the Park http://www.nplas.org/twomedicine.html) and have a sandwich at their lunch area along with a warm beverage. I don't know how long we spent shopping but we loaded up on many fine huckleberry things. :y:

After lunch and realizing a hike in the Two Medicine area would not pan out, we headed to East Glacier to check out Glacier Park Lodge. On the way, we encountered a black bear  foraging alongside the road. It was concentrating on nothing but eating no matter the weather or the cars. I was able to get a short 1:31 Video: http://youtu.be/YUmjOt95df8

We arrived at Glacier Park Lodge to see a dog being harassed by two magpies. One of them nipped the dog on this back. All of a sudden this dog brings a stick to Gary and throws it toward his feet. So Gary obliged and they played fetch for a few minutes before we went to walk the long garden strip at the Lodge. Soon the weather would change as the rain drove us inside; not such a terrible place to be believe me. We toured the lodge for awhile until the sun came out when we finished our walk along the garden and the outside of this magnificent structure.

I had been to Running Eagle (also called Trick Falls) back in 2003 but it was in August so you didn't get to see the double falls. The trail had thimbleberry bushes on both sides of the wooded area of the trail. Believe it or not, you can actually make jams and such with the thimbleberry. It is many times confused with the raspberry. Both are members of the rose family.
On the trail I ran into a New Yorker I had met up at Logan Pass. That's what fun about GNP is that it's small enough you may run into someone else you've seen along the way. There was only one other couple on the trail at around 10AM.
The falls were flowing pretty ferociously as there was snow melt going on for the middle of July. There was much more snow on the west side but nevertheless, for July, water volume was pretty high.
We only spent a very short time as we were heading for Two Med to catch the next boat ride. But it is a rewarding destination walk that ANYONE can do.... even when only the lower Falls are falling. Photos later. And aren't you surprised...15 mins in and out for me is amazing.
