With the winter storm wrapping up we started the hike in the clouds. Had a group of 11 including children as young as 6. We took our time on the way down with several stops. Weather was cool in the 50's which made for a terrific sweat free hike in long sleeves and pants (Definately required to avoid multiple scars and scratches from the overgrown catclaws and other prickly bushes)
Really enjoyed the rugged beauty and the ruins were incredible. Sorry to see the roof has collapsed in one portion fairly recently when it looks like some photos on this site show that it is intact. Very cool experience and the kids loved it. Continued down the trail to Angel's Basin and found some very nice camping spots with plenty of room for our tents. It rained pretty good most of the early evening making for kids to go to bed early. Night was cool with the occasional rain. Morning was crisp with a slight freeze as cold air settled in the valley while the walls started revealing the morning sun. We then bushwhacked up "ButtCrack Mountain" (couldn't find peak name on Forest Service Superstition Wilderness map). We had a great time up there and took some great shots of the basin.
The sun dried out everything and we were able to pack up and get on up the trail about Noon.
We pressed pretty hard on the way up only taking two short rest stops and were out by 2:40. Great sunny day but still cool enough that once back at the trailhead. We had to don additional layers to keep warm.
One Question What's up with all the guns? We passed a bunch of folks packing heat... |
