Overview
This usually reliable perennial spring and backpack campsite Option is often approached by a short, easy-to-navigate off-trail #171 hike from the Houston Brothers Trail #171 connection at Aspen Spring. I recommend downloading and utilizing this out-and-back GPS Route which begins on FR139G.


Note
This description provides the short 4WD driving route (now hiking route only) from FR139 on FR9616E to reach this spring area. From the intersection of FR139 / FR9616E, this is an "official" out-and-back hiking route to the perennial McFarland Spring and Backpack Camping Area. FR9616E is no longer legal for any motor vehicle access.

    (Park/TH Starts off FR139G)
    From the PHX area: Option 1- Take the Beeline Hwy 87 all the way past the small community of Clints Well, continue on Hwy 87 past the right turn for signed Blue Ridge Reservoir, continue on Hwy 87 past the signed right turn for Moqui / Blue Ridge Campgrounds, continue on Hwy 87 past the Blue Ridge Ranger Station to the next signed FR right turn onto FR95; Turn Right onto FR95 and follow signs for FR95 South to FR95/FR96 intersection at East Clear Creek Bridge; "Stay on" FR95 (~right turn SSW) and continue until you reach signed FR139; Turn left onto FR139 and continue south on FR139 for ~3.5mi to signed FR139G on your right side; Turn Right onto un-maintained FR139G and continue driving slowly for 0.5mi to Parking/TH Start just off Left Side of FR139G at waypoint N34.48887 W111.18831;

    From the PHX area: Option 2- Drive Hwy 87 north through Payson, Pine, and Strawberry.. approx 10.5 miles north of Strawberry on Hwy 87 at MP281.1, turn right at signed FR300 (the Rim Road), and continue ~16 miles on FR300 to the signed intersection with FR139. Turn Left on FR139 and continue for ~4+ miles to the signed but easy-to-miss intersection with FR139G (34.482725 -111.186375). Turn Left onto un-maintained FR139G and continue driving slowly for .50mls to Parking/TH Start just off Left Side of FR139G at waypoint N34.48887 W111.18831;

    Note: Option 1 Drive is an additional +20 miles one way on Hwy 87 but not much additional driving time difference from driving in from Option 2 Drive on FR300;
