This hike can be considered either an "out and back" or lasso loop depending upon how you choose to proceed. As detailed in the accompanying GPX route the "loop" is more easily handled in a counterclockwise direction with the more scenic views being reserved for the return leg. Your hike is entirely along the western slopes and washes of Picketpost Mountain. No special hiking skills, or navigational tools are required and this is a kid/pet friendly trail-- watch out for horse droppings.
Hike: Begin at the parking lot of the Picketpost Trailhead by leaving the south end of the lot and directly entering into Alamo Canyon {wash]. Proceed along the old jeep road through Alamo Canyon in a southerly direction (easily traced with cairns). Remain in the wash when you notice that the jeep trail takes a sharp turn to the right (west). The wash will narrow as you climb and then rise from the wash back on to the Arizona Trail. At this point the AZT will begin climbing and rise toward the intersection with the horse trail that makes its way east toward Telegraph Canyon. From the intersection, reverse your steps and return to the Picketpost Trailhead by following the well-maintained AZT.

This is an easy early or mid-morning hike. [Next time I plan on extending the loop through Telegraph Canyon to the Apache Tears Mine.]
