Overview The Black Hills Back Country Byway, AKA the old Safford/Clifton Hwy, travels 21 miles (one way) through the northern end of the Peloncillo Mountains. The entire road is unpaved but is accessible to high-clearance vehicles during dry weather. Allow at least 2 hours driving time one way to travel the byway, not including stops. An excellent "along the way" interpretive driving brochure can be picked up at the Safford Chamber of Commerce or printed off the BLM website. Check out the Official Route and Triplogs.
