Black Hills Back Country Byway is a 21 mile one way scenic drive with 1,800 feet elevation gain. Located 17 miles east of Safford Arizona. March and November are the best months to enjoy this drive. This hike involes off trail navigation. Review triplogs, photos and the route to understand the terrain before heading out.


Overview: The Black Hills Back Country Byway, AKA the old Safford/Clifton Hwy, travels 21 miles (one way) through the northern end of the Peloncillo Mountains. The entire road is unpaved, but is accessible to high-clearance vehicles during dry weather. Allow at least 2 hours driving time one way to travel the byway, not including stops. An excellent "along the way" interpretive driving brochure can be picked up at the Safford Chamber of Commerce or can be printed off the BLM website.

    From Safford, head east out of town along US 70. Merge northeast onto US 191 (towards Clifton/Morenci) and take for 8.2 miles to milepost 139. Turn left onto the Black Hills Back Country Byway.
