Brown's Mountain Summit (MSP)
Took it easy this weekend after over-doing it last weekend. Hiked to the summit of Brown's Mountain from the Brown's Ranch Trailhead. Hit the trail around 6:20 so it was getting a little warm as I hiked up, but this is a short and easy hike. I of course got my obligatory 360 photo from the summit:

Also spotted a desert tortoise. Photos to come.

Nice hike on some trails in the MSPN area with Ryan and Lauren. Saw our first rattler of the year spotted by Lauren in the third hiker position :o Good for Ryan and I it was on its best behavior. Nice morning hike.

It was fine time turtle got a bit of elevation in his rehab diet.
We were treated to a bobcat siting on the way in. Denny about wet himself.

Overcast, misted a couple of times, a bit of a breeze, the weather was perfect.
We saw a couple of hikers and some mountain bikers enjoying the day.

I ran the Turtle up Brown's Mountain, then was going to show him around some of the Brown's Ranch ruins.
The McDowell Mountain Conservancy had a large group of stewards out (15-20) in the Browns Ranch ruin area. They were comparing old documents/surveys to the current ruins, documenting and recording what they found.

Next off to show Denny the Metates at Cathedral Rock and a stop by the Ampitheater.

An enjoyable morning catching up with my favorite Testudine. :y:

Now THIS is the way to get to Brown's Mtn summit in northern MSP. If you are aggravated by traffic on Brown's Ranch Road or that's it's a boring, sandy trail . . . then take this route via Wrangler Trail in a loop.

Brown's Ranch Rd :next: Upper Ranch :next: Wrangler :next: Brown's Mtn trail :next: spur up/back :next: Brown's Mtn :next: Upper Ranch :next: Brown's Ranch Rd.

Avoid some traffic and Wrangler has nice little ups/downs and prettier scenery.

Met two MSC stewards (one from class 12 and one from class 40) - - then almost to the scenic lookout I ran into two more stewards that I know and wanted to hike with (Marsha and Lynne) - - what luck! They were headed a different way - so I went up to the summit for lunch then back down in a loop.

As a newly minted MSP steward, I decided to contribute to my All Trails Challenge quota by driving up to this trailhead for the first time. The first mile of the hike was a pretty boring wander down a dirt path. But the trail up to the summit was great, and the views from the summit are pretty awesome and expansive.

I did the Wrangler Trail by accident because I missed the turn for Brown's Mountain Trail. And I did the Jane Rau trail at the very end just to knock off another one on the list.

I was a little under the weather the first couple days of the new year. I felt better on Saturday morning and wanted to get out for a short hike in a new area. I talked to Claire and she was down.

We hit the trail late morning and made a clockwise loop around Cone Mountain and Brown's Mountain while making a quick stop on Brown's Summit. The views up there were very nice. There's still lots of snow on the higher elevation. Four Peaks looks magnificent!

I felt a lot better as this hike progressed and I'm glad we got out for a couple of hours. This is a decent area for hiking. It's better suited for mountain bikes in my opinion. Thanks Claire for joining me on this one.

Cone Mountain & Brown's Mountain Summits
needed a peak today
also needed a decent hike
backed out of one event, missed out on another, and had two less than stellar days due to weather
i've been up brown's mountain before, but not this year
coupled with cone mountain, seemed worth driving up to the mcdowell sonoran preserve - north
took a nap after work this morning, then finally got going and started hiking around noon
upper ranch trail to cone mountain loop
found a decent line on the east side of cone mountain
pretty easy off trail
most vegetation was avoidable, any scree was packed down by recent rains, and there were lots of black rocks to step on
approached from the same side flying_fliver did on his ascent
the summit area was bigger than i anticipated
you're not very high, but still good views of the other peaks: brown's, cholla and little granite mountains
didn't stay long due to some flying ants and other bugs
came down the same way and continued on the loop back to upper ranch trail
took a right on brown's mountain trail and hit the summit
more nice views of MSP-N and a good breeze by now
heard a beehive in the lighter cliff face on the descent - didn't stop to look :o
took wrangler, rustler and hackamore trails to finish out the day
another beehive along hackamore about halfway between rustler and cone mountain trails :o
an ambitious hike bot could get good tracks for rustler and hackamore trails from my route
not much AEG out here if you're not hitting the peaks
haven't seen all the trails, but i'll be back, hopefully for a trail run on some of the others
saw only four hikers and one mountain biker
seemed odd for such a nice afternoon
had fun and got two more peaks for 2014 :)

My aunt is in town from Atlanta for a few days. She is a botanist and has published a book on plants of granite outcrops - and a huge college lab textbook. We have a lot in common, and she loves the desert. Always great for her to visit.
We hiked up to Brown's mountain summit despite moderate gnats - had brunch - then back down.
Then onto have lunch with my daughter Caroline at school.

Had the day off for MLK holiday - kids at daycare - so I got in a nice morning hike in northern McDowell preserve. I went counter-clockwise from this description. First time I've been down the back part of Brown's Mountain and it's plain but pretty (and more quiet). Cone mountain trail looks like a nice flat trail to try with kids sometime.

Had planned for a date hike tonight, but babysitter canceled at the last minute. So we brought the kids with us, and turned out to be a super fun evening. We hiked to Brown's Ranch ruins in 2007, but this was our first time hiking from the new swanky trail head. I had no idea there were so many little trails off the main Brown's Ranch Road trail that was there back in 2007. Tons of them - all interlocking - mostly flat and sandy. Great for trail running or biking. Little nature trail loop planned too.

Today we took Brown's Ranch Rd trail to Brown's Mountain Trail to the peak and back same route. Highlight of this hike (and maybe of my whole summer) was seeing a BABY desert tortoise on the trail about mid way up to Brown's mountain peak. Cute little thing - see You Tube video below. Kids went crazy with excitement over it. George asked where his Mommy was and could he pick it up. We watched him/her move speedily across the trail and hide in a some brush. Might never again in my life see 2 1/2 inch desert tortoise!

When we were 0.3 from the peak, the trail was too loose and slippery for Brad to make it with George on his back. So they stayed behind at the scenic overlook, and just Caroline and I went to the top. She is one tough little hiker : app : - in 90 degree heat and direct sun - but she made it up that mountain and was so proud at the top! She took a little pleasure in the fact that George couldn't get to the top but she could. And that probably no one else in her PreK class has ever hiked to the top of this mountain (most likely true).

Love the views as you climb to the top of Brown's mountain. The rock types towards the top are fascinating. Lots of lichen with all the recent rains. We topped off the evening at Greasewood Flat with drinks, dinner, dancing. What a night!! My kind of Saturday.
