A little work for a big reward. by FOTG ![]() Overview
The Little Bear Trail is a short trail that meanders through the desert uplands of the Gila Wilderness until dropping down into Little Bear Canyon and then eventually making its way to its terminus at the Middle Fork of the Gila River. The Hike The Little Bear Trail starts at the spacious and developed TJ Corral Trailhead. From the trailhead parking lot, the trail gently climbs to a high point a little less than three miles in. Sweeping views, junipers, and hardy ponderosa characterize the first few miles of the hike until the short descent into Little Bear Canyon. A sandy creek bottom and open Canyon eventually give way to a nearly half-mile stretch of narrow, tall canyon walls. The trail and Little Bear Canyon eventually end at its intersection with the Middle Fork of the Gila River and the Middle Fork Trail #157. From here, many choose to continue on to Jordan Hot Springs for an overnight trip, or an ambitious day hike. You may also loop back from here via the Middle Fork Trail, however, a short road walk will be needed to complete one's loop. Another worthy option is to take a break at the Gila River and then return the way you came.
