Picnic Loop Trail #714 - Shaded, few elevation changes - Difficulty level: easy to moderate - Length: 2.5 miles - Popular with hikers and cyclists - Frequent wildlife sightings - Trailhead is found in main campground at north end cul-desac Wagonwheel Loop Trail #700 - Mostly open, shaded, sandy - Difficulty level: easy - Length: 2 miles - Popular with hikers, cyclists, and equestrians - Frequent wildlife sightings - Alternate entrance from Little Walnut Rd. at Wagon Wheel subdivision Mountain Loop Trail #719 - Steep, rocky, shaded terrain - Difficulty level: difficult - Length: 1.7 miles - Popular with hikers; seldom used by cyclist or equestrians - Provides the only access to the peak of 80 Mountain 80 Mountain Trail #710 - Steep, rocky, unshaded terrain - Difficulty level: difficult - Length: 0.5 mile - Not heavily used due to difficulty - NOT a loop trail: out & back - Great views from the top - Length: 1.5 miles - Popular with hikers & cyclists - Western portions of this loop are unshaded and very hot in summer. Divide Access Trail #712 - Mostly open and shaded - Difficulty level: easy - Length: 1 mile - Popular with hikers, cyclists and equestrians - Provides access from Little Walnut Picnic Grounds to the CDNST Day Use Area Located just outside Silver City, the Little Walnut-Gomez Peak picnic grounds provide a pleasant day use area for small or large groups and individuals/families. The area is generally open from 8:00 a.m. until sunset during spring, summer and fall; winter hours vary according to weather conditions. The Silver City Ranger District offers three reservable large group picnic areas within the Gomez Peak – Little Walnut day use area, as well as individual picnic sites. All areas have vault toilets, picnic grills, and tables. In addition, the largest area also offers added amenities of a covered shelter, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits. For all areas within the Gomez Peak – Little Walnut day use areas, no firewood is available and overnight camping is prohibited. For group sites, rentals must be paid at time of reservation and rental fee is non-refundable. I asked him what people did at the park. "Oh some hike Gomez Peak or picnic. The Continental Divide is nearby. I've met a couple backpackers in the past few months.
