When you "Heart" a good quick hike by paulhubbard OverviewLocated at the north end of Red Mountain Ranch, this is the starting point for a myriad of paths that spiderweb the area between Red Mountain Ranch and the Canal that starts at Granite Reef Dam at the end of the Lower Salt River recreation area. One feature of the area is a tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook School incident. This can be seen on Google Satellite at N33° 30.241' W-111° 42.511'. Hike Starting at the northwest end of E Viewmont Circle. Head northwest over the small bridge and onto the very obvious pathway that parallels the fenceline for Tally Defense systems property (no trespassing signs that can't be missed).Once you get to a small hill, you can go around it in either direction, but we prefer clockwise for good views west and a nice view of Red Mountain. At the northwestern side of the hill, choose any one of the many paths that head northeast, and go toward a small "mesa" between the mountain and the Salt River. When you top out at the little mesa, you'll find a few rock-lined trails that lead to the Sandy Hook tribute. This is a good turn-around point. Choose any of the numerous paths, and head back. You can't get lost! Check out the Triplog.
