We've wanted to do Tom's Thumb for a long time and today seemed perfect with the cooler, overcast skies. Lot of people on the trail (not as crowded as Peralta), but still a nice hike! Wildflowers are coming out nicely too!

I hadn't been to Broadway cave in a couple of years, and Kat had never been there, so up we go before it gets too hot. Lots of other people had the same idea, but that's okay, it was a nice day! The cave hasn't changed, still some grafitti :-(

Being an Arizona native, and having previously lived in Tucson for 9 years, I'm almost embarassed to admint this was my first time in Madera Canyon. What a nice little gem! A bit crowded, but it was Thanksgiving weekend. There are tons of great, family friendly trails around here. We're going back to explore more and head up to Baldy/Wrightston!

Right in the heart of West Sedona is the Sugarloaf Trailhead, with multiple offshoots. We started onthe Teacup TZrail, then went up the Skidmark trail, then down the Coffee Poot Rock Trail, then up to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain. Just love Sedona!!

With all of Oak Creek closed, we headed to Flag for a little hike. Funny that I was born and raised in Flagstaff and until now had never been to Sandy's Canyon. Pretty spot, easy hike, very family friendly! (Just watch out for the Poison Ivy along the trail leading into the canyon!)

Comparing cameras (spawned from the Good vs. Great forum thread). All these photos are unretouched (except the very last one), so you can get a feel for the quality of the equipment without the ability of the photographer getting in the way.

Yes, the cameras all have different glass, but all in all the I love the versitality of the a99. Oh, and I do love Red Mountain at sunset!

So we decided out first hike as a married couple should be to a waterfall in Kauai. Hanakapa'ai falls fit the bill exactly! We got up super early (for our standards) and hit the trail at 8:30am. The first 2 miles of the trail are spectacular, with panoramic views of the beaches and the cliffs of the Na Pali (sp?) coast!

At the 2 mile mark we crossed the creek at the Kalalau beach - The water was about 1 foot deep, and I was able to keep my boots dry by rock-hopping. We goofed around on the beach watching the intense waves breaking for about 20 minutes, then two of our party decided to return to the trailhead to join their wives (who were busy shopping in Hanalea), so off they went, and we headed inland towards the falls.

after 1/2 mile or so, we ran across people coming back from the falls who were all complaining about the water rising; "it was ankle deep when we went, and waist deep on the return trip..." We persevered, hoping to be able to get to the falls. There's always clouds at the mountain tops, there's always a waterfall there, and there's always a creek running below the falls. What could go wrong?

When we got to the first of the river crossings it was obvious we were going no further. The water was deep and swift! There were people across the river who created a human chain to get everyone across, and even with that one of the girls was swept under and almost got washed away, but they were able to get everyone across. It was at that point that we turned around, disappointed that we wouldn't make it to the falls.

On the return trip I kept wondering how we would be able to cross the creek to get back, btu only with respect to how would keep my camera dry. Little did I know...

When we arrived back at the creek crossing, the 1 foot deep crossing was now a 6 foot deep raging river. No crossing here! There were a bunch of people milling around, some trying to make a makeshift crossing with an old ladder and other debris, but everyone knew we weren't going anywhere.

People on the trailhead side of the river went for help, and we got to the task of gathering firewood and prepared to hunker down for the night, collecting Ti leaves to make bedding and doing our best to create some kind of shelter. Air rescue finally showed up at about 5:30pm but they were only able to pluck the people trapped further upstream and bring them to our location before it got dark. We were there for the evening, with only our swimsuits and tank tops for protection. Even the locals were not aware there was a flash flood building in the mountains. We were told the water rose 5 feet in less than 5 minutes.

It rained... Then it rained more... Then it rained harder... It seemed like the more we begged for the rain to let up, the harder it came down. More rain fell that night than we see in Arizona in a year! I found a trash bag, complete with trash. I emptied it, turned it inside out, and we wore this for a rain poncho all night. The ground was so saturated and muddy that there was no laying down. There was one tarp that provided minor relief from the rain, and we gathered under it, but then we got cold. So most the night we stood (yes, STOOD) by the fire to stay warm, even though we were getting drenched the whole time. Water flowed out of my boots when I stepped!

When first light broke, the air rescue returned and took us out 4 at a time back to the parking lot. We got back to the hotel and cancelled our dinner cruise that was going back to the same area - We'd had enough rain for one day!

Honeymoons are supposed to be unforgettable, and this one certainly met that expectation!

But we will be going back, now we HAVE TO make it to the falls!

We were going to go to the big kahuna (Barnhardt) but not knowing if much water would be flowing I took Kat's nephew and his wife to Fossil Springs. This is such a wonderful hike! I'm torn on which is better, going up first (I.E., Barnhardt), or climbing back to the truck. The shaded first part of the trail was a bit dicey, covered with snow and slick ice, and the wind was "brisk", but it quickly warmed up as soon as we made the first turn to the north. There were only two other groups of hikers, and neither opted to continue to the falls, so we had the place all to ourselves!

Just befpre the springs there was a group of 6-8 Coatimundi, but I wasn't quick enough to get any pics of them

The hike description for the Butcher Jones trail fits the bill for this day perfectly! We had some out of town relatives visiting, and they wanted to do some hiking, so off we go (plus, Butcher Jones is only about 15 minutes from my house). The weather couldn't have been better, especially since our visitors are from Indiana where the wind chill was -35 on this day. Butcher Jones is a great trail, not too tough, and great views of Saguaro Lake and Four Peaks. The first part of the trail was pretty crowded, but after a mile or so, we saw no one else.

This was a total "I don't know, what do you want to do?" last minute hike, we didn't even get to the trailhead until 2:30, so we didn't have time to go very far. As you get higher into the mountains, the fire become more and more evident. There are a few spots with a lot of fallen leaves, so I'm sure it's still very pretty in the fall and well worth another visit to venture further than we had time for today. I don't know if the little creek was from Mormon Springs, but it was flowing all the way next to us which made for a nice afternoon.

After Xmas hike up to 7 falls. We got an early start, 8am at the trailhead and it was 39 degrees and windy, brrrr. But it was a beautiful hike, and not too crowded yet. We didn't know about the trailhead at the end of Bear Canyon Rd, it shaves off about .7 miles each way of walking along the roads of Sabino rec area (and no parking fee!). Even though the falls were pretty crowded it was still great to see them with more than an obligatory trickle. It was difficult lighting with the sun coming up, but I'm loving my new Sony a99 full-frame setup!

Last year I proposed to Kat on the Parsons Trail, and we thought we were a little late for the peak colors. So we re-visited a little earlier this year, but we were either too early or there was a cold snap that caused a lot of the leaves to drop before changing color.

But hey, it's Sycamore Canyon, and the scenery just doesn't get a lot better no matter what time of year! We went all the way back to the headwater at Parsons Spring, which is frankly a little anti-climactic... It's a pool against a cliff that's shaded and difficult to photograph, and because the water is standing at that spot, there were a lot of bugs!

Next time we go we're determined that we're going to try to hike along the creek as much as we can, since the main trail takes you away from the water in several locations.

We set off to take a walk behind our house on the Hawes trails, and Kat wanted to show me the cool "thing" she found a while back. The heart is about 20' across and the trail leads right to it. It's north of Red Mountain Ranch about 200 yards south of the canal. I have no idea who would have put this together, but what a nice gesture!

If you know of anyone in that area, please share this with them - Maybe a family member will find these photos.

Finally getting around to posting our hike in Lockett Meadow and he Inner Basin. It was a beautiful day, a crisp breeze, and not too many people. We were about a week late for the full aspen show, but it was still well worth the trip!
