  Likely In-Season!
Overview
Shay Mountain (elevation of 9,989 feet and prominence of 1,629 feet) is part of the Abajo Mountains range in southeastern Utah. The hike is entirely on roads and trails.

Hike
The hike begins on Shay Mountain OHV Trail #098. The road has some rocky sections but it is not too difficult to hike on. You'll gain about 750 feet in elevation in the first mile, but the grade lessens substantially after that.

At about the 2 mile mark turn right onto a road that prohibits motorized vehicles. This road/trail goes all the way to the Shay Mountain summit. This section passes by and through some impressive mature aspen groves. The "wow" factor will be high in this section when the aspen leaves are in their autumn glory around October 1st each year.

There are some nice, unobstructed views at the summit. After taking a break and enjoying the views, return to the trailhead the way that you came.

    To hike
In the town of Monticello, Utah start at the junction of Main St. and W 200 S; set your odometer to zero.
    0.0 Go west on W 200 S.
0.25 bear left onto Abajo Dr. The road is also known as CR 101.
10.0 Turn left onto Foy Lake Road.
11.1 Turn right onto Shay Mountain Road #104. You will now leave pavement and be on a dirt road. If dry, the road should be OK for a crossover SUV. There will be a vault toilet at the junction. Signs will point to Aspen Flat Trail and Shay Ridge Trail.
16.15 Turn right onto FR #082, the Shay Mountain Motorized Trail. Lower clearance vehicles should park here, which will add 1.8 miles RT and about 150 feet of elevation gain to the hike.
16.6 Shay Mountain Motorized Trail bears right onto FR #081.
17.05 Park here. Note that the Shay Mountain Motorized Trail is an easy drive for a high clearance 4WD vehicle but might be challenging in a couple of places for a lesser vehicle.

To continue further will require an ATV or a modified jeep.
