Don’t Blink
by mt98dew

Overview
The Shorty Trail is one of eight new trails that were created when the Adobe Jack TH was created in 2016. This TH is directly off the 89A just past Mariposa Grill. There is enough parking for only 5 vehicles. There is no fee for parking at this TH. A hotel has recently been built that is directly adjacent to this parking area. Kind of an odd medley of high-end traveling and backyard hiking. Actually, it looks like an ideal marriage if you are ok with city hiking. It doesn’t get much more convenient than this.

At the TH there is a great map of the Sedona trail system as well as a localized map of the Adobe Jack (Soldier Wash Trails). There is also a bike repair station which is becoming a common theme with some of the more established Arizona THs. Since this trailhead's initial founding, they have expanded the amenities. In addition to the maps and bike station, they have added a drinking fountain, a port-a-john, a couple of benches, and a dog station (plastic bags to collect your canine’s contribution to the trail hazards).

Hike
The Shorty Trail is an interior trail so some additional hiking is required. The quickest route to reach the Shorty Trail is to take Adobe Jack Trail 0.9 miles to the Power Plunge Trail and then follow the Power Plunge for 0.22 miles to reach the beginning of the Shorty Trail.

This trail is incredibly short and is hardly worth mentioning. However, it is a signed and mapped trail so I will try to provide a brief description. The trail heads off in a northward direction and with a few curves and a couple of step-like climbs ends in 0.2 miles. If you blink, you might miss this trail. The trail is composed of hard red clay with some rocky stairs thrown in for elevation. The views are limited with trees obscuring most of the mountain scenes. You do get some teasing glimpses of Capitol Butte and the mountains to the south, but no Kodak moments. The trail ends when it connects to the Gran Central Trail. At this point, you have several options. You can return the way you came for about a 3-mile hike or take the Gran Central north or south to create a loop hike. All the trails in the area are signed and mapped so creating a loop on “the fly” is doable.

Synopsis
This trail doesn’t offer much. It’s basically a signed connector trail. One more option when navigating the Soldier Wash area.
