The Spine of Isle by The_Eagle ![]() The Greenstone Ridge Trail on Isle Royale National Park is a 40-mile journey along the island’s central spine, offering stunning views and a true wilderness experience. Starting from either Windigo in the west or Rock Harbor in the east, the trail showcases the island's rugged beauty, which is surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of Lake Superior. Many of the feeder trails can also be used to create looping options or other adventures. You can catch boat shuttles allowing numerous other hiking opportunities.
As you hike along the ridge, you’ll pass through a variety of ecosystems. The trail is named after the greenstone, or chlorastrolite, a semi-precious gemstone found only in this region. You'll walk through dense forests of balsam fir, white spruce, and paper birch, which provide shade and a rich habitat for wildlife. Keep an eye out for moose and wolves. The moose can be seen grazing in the marshy lowlands, while the elusive wolves (spotted more often lately) leave behind signs like tracks and scat.
The Greenstone Ridge Trail is Rich in history. Native American tribes used the island for hunting and copper mining for thousands of years, leaving behind ancient artifacts. The trail itself was used by early settlers and miners in the 19th century as they sought to exploit the island’s natural resources. This hike is not only a test of endurance but also a walk through the rich natural and cultural history of Isle Royale. The Greenstone Ridge Trail offers an unforgettable adventure in one of America’s most remote national parks. Check out the Official Route and Triplogs.
