Thanks for the heads up. Love that boot. BUt beware, If you're like me, you have to size up one full size from other shoes/boots.

Re: Grief Hill trailhead: Camp Verde

Thanks. I did finally find the trail up the mountainside this week. Still haven't quite figured out how to access it from Cherry Road--besides bushwhacking cross country. Where does that jeep road come out? Does it come out on Hwy 260 some where? It's not shown on my topo or forest service maps.

Re: Grief Hill trailhead: Camp Verde

Yeah, this is the trail head off Cherry Road. There's a big sign and a huge parking lot but no indications of trails or directions. I tried to follow the directions in the Richard/Sherry Magnum (Sedona Hikes) book but I lose the trail at the same spot. I'm not sure they're even hiking the right trai...

Grief Hill trailhead: Camp Verde

Does anyone have any experience with old wagon road called Grief Hill near Camp Verde? There's a trailhead off Cherry Road but no other signage. The whole area is a honeycomb of jeep trails and cow paths. I've tried four times now to pick up the trail but no luck. Can't find anything online and the ...

Re: Scary NRA Militia types?!!

Ever been out hiking and hear bullets whistling overhead? A little unnerving to say the least. As for myself, I agree with the guy who simply said guns are heavy and carry a large responsibilty. I go outdoors to feel free. Even though that puts me at risk of criminals and grizzly bears, that's a cha...

Re: Fossil Creek getting trashed

Close the roads to the general public. It's the only way to save the ecosystem down there. As Edward Abbey envisioned, it's time to put up a big sign that says, "Howdy Folks. Welcome to your national park (forest). Established for your pleasure. Park your car, jeep, truck, atv, tank, motorboat,...

Re: North Rim Fires

Thanks for the 411. Got the rain and a little cooling trend. The fires are a non issue. Looks like a go. I love it when a plan comes together! BTW, I'm having a little 46th birthday celebration at the confluence of Nankoweap and the Colorado Wednesday. You're all invited. BYOB.

North Rim Fires

Hi. I'm set to hike Nanoweap on Monday. I heard Cape Royal Road was closed, but apparently not House Valley Rock road? Just how smoky is it up there? (How much asthma meds am I going to have to pack?)

You're right, there's no need to go at "rush hour." I hiked the Grandview trail first, then walked into the Back Country Office around three o'clock. No one was there so I picked up my permit (Nankoweap!) and was out the door in five minutes. Yes, I could've faxed my request in, but where'...

Canyon Permits

I'm heading up to the South Rim backcountry office on the first of the month for my September permits. Does anyone know when the line starts to form? Last year I didn't get up there til almost nine and drew a large number. Still got the permit I wanted but it was a long boring wait (all day)around t...

All great books! Plus check out these three: We Swam the Grand Canyon (A True Story of a Cheap Vacation that got little out of hand) by Bill Beer. Hard to find, but an outrageous adventure. Beyond the Deep (The deadly descent into the World's Most Treacherous Cave) Bill Stone and Barbara am Ende. A ...

Rim to Rim Planning

I am planning a rim to rim day hike this spring? Any advice? Is May 1st going to be too hot? Trail runners or light boots? A good place to stay near the North Rim?
