Re: Peregrin in Metro Scottsdale?
I saw a Cooper's Hawk in my backyard some years back, deep in suburban Mesa, so it's not unheard of. It was using my birdbath.

Re: How Not to Hike the Tanner
I can't speak to the Backcountry process, but several years ago when I applied for a camping permit at Bright Angel I got a response asking me to describe my route and my previous GC hiking experience before they approved it. No idea what flagged my request in particular, seems like a rather tame one.

Just for the record... I was trying to be sensitive and caring by pointing out the legitimate plight of Dalmations across the country that died, needlessly, because of idiots that shouldn't have gotten them in the first place (probably the same people that will now try canyoneering). ...like all th...

Running has really helped with my cardio, and I'm not a fast runner! Putting in the occasional run at altitude helps too.

Re: Day hike to the river and back
April's about the perfect time of year to hike down to the Tonto platform - about halfway down, you get a really good view of the Canyon. I'm a fan of the Kaibab-Tonto-BA loop. Other than bragging rights, it really doesn't add much to the experience to continue on to the bottom and bounce. IMO, of c...

Are you doing the Marathon??? My husband is... I am walking the 10K... Yes, I'm doing the marathon, my first year. :scared: S...

Peralta TH access closed Sunday morning ( 2013-02-17 )
Just a quick adviso; the road between US 60 and the Peralta TH will be closed Sunday morning due to the Lost Dutchman Marathon, from sometime before the start (7:00 AM) until the last of us makes it to the highway.

Are you Flagstaff folk seeing a lot of smoke in town? I'm heading up this weekend for the Folk Festival and the 5K; does the whole town smell like barbeque?

Anyone know what's going on with the new fire north of Flag as of Sunday? Not familiar enough with the neighborhood names to recognize if it's close to "town" or out in the boonies. I'm supposed to be heading up there next weekend.

I'm partial to the South Kaibab - Tonto - Bright Angel loop, especially in April/May when the Tonto platform comes to life. Drops you down into the Canyon for a nice long stroll w/o feeling rushed & still leaves me time for a hot shower & dinner with drinks at the top! I could do w/o the epi...
