Re: Fatality for Arizona Hiker on Mt. Hood

Very sad. I just don’t understand leaving a injured person behind! I don't think anyone left an injured person behind. Sounds like he was tired and they decided to complete the last ~1 mile at different paces. I've done it several times when hiking with another person, sometimes while leading and so...

All of the major upper ECC destinations look to be within the perimeter - FR95 crossing, Kinder Crossing, Horse Crossing, Mack's Crossing :(

Re: What's your least favorite?

Havasupai. Sit on the phone for days, spend 100 bucks on permits, drive 5 hours, and hike 10 miles to set camp up at a crowded campground and hang out by a crowded waterfall.

Re: God help us.....

I'm also confused. They're opening a Starbucks in a town near the Grand Canyon. I don't see how that's even news, much less shocking or depressing news. Frankly, I'm shocked there isn't one there yet.

Black Canyon Trail between Table Mesa Rd and Hwy 69. The South end is real flat except for dipping in and out of the Agua Fria.

Re: Route Scout - GPS Topo Mapper & Recorder

Using 3.1.14 on my LG V20. When recording a track, I open route scout to check my track and progress, then lock my phone and put it back in my pocket. Right away I'll hear a "mile split statistic" notification., Unlock phone and check Route Scout again, the track jumped to a random point 5-10 miles ...

Re: 400 GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card

Has anybody here had an SD Card failure? Yep. Out at the EF Black River setting up for an evening shot. Had to drive back to Show Low through a stormy, rainbow-y sunset to buy a new one from Walmart. Of course it was dark by the time I was back to the forest. Still, I'd rather have the card fail be...

Re: Lightweight backpacking tripod solution

Nice and innovative! Looks like it would work well for solid, steady surfaces. Appears it could be tricky in creeks. Then again, since I got my sweet, solid RRS setup (which weighs as much as 3 of my 2-person tents  ), I no longer have an outlet for violent rage, so maybe I could benefit from o...

Re: 26 "hikers" rescued from Sabino Canyon

When I saw the headlines of the recent Tanque Verde Falls incident I thought it was a odd to describe the 17 rescued as "hikers" because they just parked a car and scrambled down to go swimming. Wait... Did the headline refer to them as hikers or as "hikers"? I think it's established that "hikers" ...

Re: 26 "hikers" rescued from Sabino Canyon

I was up at Marshall Gulch yesterday afternoon, where the road to the trailhead parallels Sabino Canyon near its headwaters. Up at 7,500 feet Sabino Canyon was already high, fast, and dangerous to cross. All I could think about was 1) how must it look 4,000 feet below after countless tributaries dum...

Re: Canyon Creek or Haigler Creek

Canyon Creek is more kid-friendly. More exploration up and down the creek without bushwhacking or climbing. It's open meadow for a couple miles, great for wandering. However, Haigler has deeper pools and is better for swimming. Just expect a little more work involved if you want to make your way ups...

Re: Yosemite snow causes hikers to get lost

I also don't understand why a ranger would lead 3 groups of lost hikers through the snow to the top of Clouds Rest at 11pm, then leave them there. That's why I'm assuming the author's use of "destination" is just a poor choice of words (or maybe since the 3 groups didn't all need to go to the same p...
