Re: Yosemite fed bears from 1923-1971
I saw the same article here, http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/yosemite-bears-changing-diet-human-food. The caption on the photo says that visitors should not store food in trees. I have never heard of that being a problem. Maybe only in Yosemite. Has anyone had a problem with hanging food ...

Re: Chances of getting a permit...
I can get you more details from Eric (Morel) about rod, line and flies if you want. Thanks, any info would be great. I was planning on bringing a 3 wt. rod that I normally use on smaller streams and creeks. I can't imagine those fish being picky eaters so I would guess normal attractor patterns wou...

Re: Chances of getting a permit...
I am doing the Thunder River trail. I will be down there for 4 days. That should give me plenty of time to explore and fly fish Tapeats Creek. I am surprised I was granted my first request because it is a popular trail.azbackpackr wrote:So, what hike are you doing?

Re: Chances of getting a permit...
The Grand Canyon Backcountry Permit webpage publishes stats for the previous year which details permits issued based on use area and month. You can get a good idea of what use areas are being heavily used and when. I just submitted a permit the second week of January for May and was granted my first...

Re: Rattlesnake photography
I was under the impression that juvenile rattlers are more dangerous because they don't know how to limit the amount of venom they inject. I'd love to know, and perhaps some of our resident herpers can chime in. In a previous rattlesnake thread (http://hikearizona.com/dex2/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=...

Re: how much water for Havasupia Canyon?
I too used a 100 oz Camelbak going in. We started at around 6:30 pm when the canyon was shaded. I tried the same thing coming out. Again, we started late when the canyon was cool and shaded. Coming out, I was a little short on water. I made it out fine, but I was a little dehydrated. This was in the...

Re: Snake Karma: To Kill or Not to Kill
I nearly stepped on this guy while out on a hike today. He never rattled or anything. He just moved the other direction. It seemed like he didn't want anything to do with me. I am pretty sure it is a Great Basin Rattlesnake. Sorry about the photo quality, the lighting was bad. After the hike, I was ...

Re: Snake Karma: To Kill or Not to Kill
@te-wa The hammocks look super comfy but I don't think they would work for me. I like to sleep on my side. I have never considered killing a snake. I think the mentality comes from how I was raised. My dad never told me not to kill snakes. He just never attempted to kill or harm a snake whenever we...

Re: Snake Karma: To Kill or Not to Kill
Has anyone ever had a problem with rattle snakes getting too close while sleeping outside under the stars as opposed to sleeping in a tent? I try to leave a tent behind whenever I can. I sometimes wonder if I will wake up next to a rattler trying to warm itself.

Why would they name a fire "Willow" when there is a "Wallow" fire burning in the same state at the same time?

Re: "Wallow Fire" in Bear Wallow Wilderness
Won't the post-fire erosion threaten the viability of those streams as trout habitat for a while? Yes, but it really depends on the percentage of burn and how much rain and snow those areas receive in the next few years. If a total burn occurred in most of the watershed areas, then they will likely...

Re: "Wallow Fire" in Bear Wallow Wilderness
wasnt there also a re-introduction area in W. Fork along the Thompson trail? hopefully that area has some trees left over, or passed over. Yes there was. G&F installed 2 fish barriers to prevent the browns from moving up the stream. That was one of my favorite places to fish. The fire did pass ...

Re: "Wallow Fire" in Bear Wallow Wilderness
WHERE are they going to be stocked? there are not many places where they could create a strong population of Apaches, not for many seasons (until habitat returns), but the good news is there wont be any pesky browns and rainbows to hamper their rebound. this reminds me of Canyon creek where many tr...

i thot wallow creek was a rehab area for apache trout.. who will restock them? and where to? Sometime after the flooding, G&F will be restock the streams and rivers. I don't know if they will restock the Brown Trout. Bear Wallow, Fish, and Conklin Creeks have been closed to fishing while G&...

Re: "Wallow Fire" in Bear Wallow Wilderness
Just still worrying about those creeks in the southern section... :( The creeks and rivers recover much quicker than the trees. The flooding will flush them pretty good which will be a good thing for the aquatic life. Many fish will die but if G&F stocks the streams, it should only take 5-10 ye...

I guess Alpine is allowed back in tomorrow morning according to inciweb and the Alpine hotline. My parents are going to head up and check on their place. They have to meet at the rodeo grounds, show proof of ownership and then they will be allowed in. I am nervous to see pictures of the area. I was ...

Escudilla burned over pretty good, is the RUMOR. I don't know if you have seen the top photo yet. They showed it at the meeting last night. I got it from the Apache-Sitgreaves flickr photostream, http://www.flickr.com/photos/apachesitgreavesnf/5836941255/in/photostream. The photo below I took 2 yea...

Re: "Wallow Fire" in Bear Wallow Wilderness
The big mountain, called South Mountain, that overhangs Alpine, is totally torched, I heard from another friend who was able to sneak in there with her husband who had a pass. Check out this gallery, https://picasaweb.google.com/wesmcb/WallowFire2011#. About half way down are some pictures of South...

@azbackpackr
Can you see Escudilla yet, or is it still too smoky? I am just wondering how bad the mountain was burned.
