how much water for Havasupia Canyon?

Post by tdefrane »

i'm doing Havasupia canyon this upcoming weekend... I've got a 100 oz Camelback and 2 48oz Nalgene bottles... I'm torn on whether i want the extra weight of the nalgene bottles filled up knowing there is water down there... Advice?

I'll be hiking EARLY EARLY morning, like 3am, so I won't be going down in the heat of the day...

Thanks for your advice!

just to get down there? the 100 oz camelbak would be enough for me
everyone's needs are different, though
maybe another liter of electrolyte mix in addition?

Going down, don't fill the bottles. Going up, fill the bottles.

The camelbak and one of the naglenes. Like nonot said, leave that nalgene empty til the hike out

I too used a 100 oz Camelbak going in. We started at around 6:30 pm when the canyon was shaded. I tried the same thing coming out. Again, we started late when the canyon was cool and shaded. Coming out, I was a little short on water. I made it out fine, but I was a little dehydrated. This was in the middle of July. It was mentioned, everyone is different. I know guys who use less water and never have a problem.

Sounds good everyone... I appreciate the feedback. I think i've decided to take a frozen lemonade down in the nalgene to start for a nice treat upon arrival.

Anyone ever take beer down there? It's always so nice to crack open a cold on upon arrival though...

People haul all manner of booze down there. When you first get into Supai there's a place that sells Ice cream. Then a little further along, there's the restaurant. One Indian taco is enough for you with some left over to share with one of the dogs that hang out there.

One more time I'm gonna say it: Don't ever take your own dog to Havasupai. The rez dogs may attack it. I have witnessed this. The dog that was attacked was paralyzed and had to be helicoptered out. (These rez dogs won't attack you, however.)

Why carry the water UP? Cache a couple of bottles on your way down for use on the way out.
