I was just there 4th of July weekend, did a little Kayaking and fishing. Didn't catch anything, but the weather was nice and the views are always great.

Monte - I love your vehicle idea! Myself, being a po' boy, just use my regular truck (a little ford ranger) which always rolls when I need it to and I've never had vandalism problems at the trailhead. For the past few months though I've been toying with the idea of getting an older jeep-like vehicle...

Good to hear! I woke up at 3:00 am and filled up this morning (there was still a line, but not nearly as bad). So the trip continues as scheduled, yay! :GB:

I'm supposed to go backpacking this weekend in Cottonwood and I am a bit worried that I won't be able to get gas to make the drive back home. Does anyone know how Northern cities are doing?

whisperlite (not shaker jet) off ebay for 20 bucks. That's a pretty good price! I have a WhisperLite as well and I think it works great .. no problems at all. I would probably go with a white gas stove if I had to do it over again, just because I feel bad throwing out the old canisters each time I ...

Parsons Spring: Is backpacking/camping allowed here?

I'm a bit confused, I read the reviews of this trail and there were several people who said this was a great backpacking trip, however, when looking through Teva-Joe's pictures I saw this: http://hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=1350 Can someone with a little more knowledge about this trail fill me i...

I went to Philmont when I was in scouts (wow, about 8 years ago I guess!) and I've gotta say it was one of the best times of my life. Probably the defining trip that got me hooked on backpacking. I've give a leg to have the opportunity go back ... well maybe not a leg but, you know!

Here's my vote as well for the Petzl Tikka ... think is PERFECT for backpacking. Hell, I've even used it when I'm out with AZGF at night and those guys are suprised my little LED performs as well as (or better than) their bulky, heavy and uncomfortable head-spotlights that they have.

That is definately a first for me, thanks for taking the picture! I'm sure you all have noticed, but even out towards the Superstitions, everything is GREEN! It's amazing what 2 weeks of rain will do for vegetation.

I think our taxes are going towards building logging roads so the logging industry can clear-cut our forests. Oops! :oplz:

I went up there yesterday and hiked probably 3 miles before my frozen toes told me to turn back. I don't have any water-proof boots so my feet were wet before I even got to the trail register. It was still fun being in snow for a couple hours .. I'll have to take a partner and be a little more serio...

I figure the earth will keep humans in check just as it does other species. When any population gets too dense for it's environment, mother nature response with starvation, disease, and war. Look at the microenvironment commonly called Africa. Genocide, starvation and disease are working to keep th...

But, unless you have some guideline to present showing other planets or something, isnt it hard to say anything scientific about wether the population is out of control or not? The human population is part of nature wether you like to think so or not. I agree that human population is part of nature...

You're right, 100 years of mis-management by the US Forest Service (zero-tolerance for fires) has brought us into the situation we're at right now. However, logging isn't the answer. Natural fires are low, cool-burning fires that sweep through the forest quickly, only burning the 'litter' (as in sma...

Exactly, the world's human population is out of control and out of balance with nature. The majority of the logging has been done within the past 80 years.

At the year of 2000, the United States [lower 48] only 15% of the forest land remains of what was here when the Pilgrims first settled.
