Reviving an OLD thread... older female hiker seeking a calm, sane non-type A kayak instructor. I'm way down in Tucson but willing to travel to get to someone!
Any advice?

Re: seeking car camping ideas near Mt Baldy
Thanks, Tortoise... I was eyeing that area, but I was hoping for something a bit more 'off the beaten path'. There does appear to be a few dirt roads coming off the lake in various directions... privacy is my preference.

seeking car camping ideas near Mt Baldy
HI folks: I'm planning to hike Mt. Baldy in a few weeks day hiking, and Ive not explored much in that general area. Can anyone suggest some car camping possibilities that would not require too much of a drive to get to the West Mt Baldy trailhead? I am aware that some of the area up there has fire d...

It's more of a drive than I think you'd prefer, but I was thinking, "Blue Range". Lanphier Trail is nice, and not slot canyon narrow, yet offers cooling waters in the creek. And not that arduous of an area to backpack, though it's likely to be hot if it doesn't rain!

My other half and I are interested; can we be added to the 'interested' list? It would be fun to meet some of you all. I've explored around this area a little bit, ages ago; nice location. (I had a mountain lion sighting up there - it ran across a dirt road as I was driving!)

Re: Heat, smoke, fires....
Well, I used my permit, and it was great! Wanted to make the TH by 5:30, but didn't get there until more like 6:15. I was a bit surprised to find several vehicles there, due to the heat. But once in the water that early, I could see why; it was gorgeous and comfortable for several hours. I had prior...

Heat, smoke, fires....
With the substantial number of fires and record breaking high temps predicted this weekend, what are folks planning? Hike early? Stay indoors? Drive out of state?
I have an Aravaipa permit for Sunday, and I'm not so sure I'm going to use it....

Tibber mode? Odd term. I just call it slug mode, myself...

seeking (preferably female) backpacking companion of the slo
Hi folks, I'm an out-of-practice backpacker, due to a long standing shoulder injury (torn rotator cuff issues). I'm looking for a backpacking buddy, preferably female (as I am, and I'm married to someone who likes to hike but backpacking not so much). It's best if someone backpacking with me is not ...

Re: backcountry camping with hiking nearby in Chiricuahuas?
Actually... I am not long gone. Just had some 'life events' that kept me coming to the board - and I thought it wasn't going to be a thread with this much traffic! Thanks!! We are planning to 'go somewhere' next weekend. Im still torn between the Chiracahuas and the Pinalenos. My other half certainl...

backcountry camping with hiking nearby in Chiricuahuas?
Hi folks - I'm looking to go somewhere in high elevations in a weekend or two, that is not to far from Tucson (say 2 - 3 hours). The less visited, the better. Have high clearance vehicles at my disposal, and drivers who know how to use 4wd, so that is not a limitation. We (my husband and I) were thi...

Re: Airplane museum in Valle
Just checking back in.. ah. Good to know. I just figure a place like the GC, one needed to avoid the main entrance at all costs :) .. It's been a few years since I've been to the S. rim, so I'm not familiar with how the traffic can be these days! I think we will take the advice here and drive the E....

Re: Airplane museum in Valle
Thanks for this! I'm going up to the Grand Canyon soon, and my other half would LOVE to see this place... even though we are going to the North rim, and it's 'just a little' out of the way. I imagine it is better (quicker) to get to the North rim from Valle by going back down to Flag, vs. skirting t...

CURRENT plaes to car camp near N rim
Hi folks - This particular forum doesn't seem to see a lot of traffic, but, I'm planning on going to the North rim of hte Grand Canyon in July :y: While I'd like to get in the canyon itself (of course), overnight options don't look good for planning, this late in the game; at least options inside th...

For sale by owner - Gregory Shasta pack, S, gently used
I have a gently used Gregory Shasta backpack I would like to sell. Only worn a few times, in Excellent condition. Selling, as it is far more pack than this slender 5'5" woman will ever be able to use! It is a high volume pack (~4500 cu) and carries its weight well. No longer made (or even sold,...

Re: Calling all canyon creepers
Thanks for all the feedback, everyone (and sorry to take so long to post back!) I think I will go with old hiking boots and wool socks that (hopefully) will dry out. I'm more concerned with ankle support than comfort, so I think for me, it's the way to go. I hope the creek won't be too cold in mid O...

Calling all canyon creepers
.. what do you wear on your feet for backpacking through water for long distances? I'm an experienced backpacker soon to go to Aravaipa for a few days. I've day hiked Aravaipa and other wet canyons, but not backpacked. I tend to need good ankle support, even with a light backpack for overnighting. I...
