I've got a GEKO 301 and so far it has proven to be very accurate. It has always been within a few feet of the the benchmarks I have compared it too, but I haven't had weather affect it yet. Don't know anything about using GPS triangulation but you would think that it would be more accurate than baro...

Does anyone know if the phone number Joe gives is correct? I've tried it a couple of times and it just keeps on ringing. Also, what does it normally cost for permits down there. Any info would be appreciated.

Actually, the GEKO 101 and 201 models do not have the altimeter feature, which is why I purchased the 301. It also has a built-in compass and is much more accurate than the other two because it uses WAAS satellites. But if you want to download maps it is limited, I use mine in addition to topos.

Those guys were flying out of Falcon Field in Mesa, saw them taking off when I left work. They are probably with the Confederate Air Force based at Falcon. Pretty awesome planes, it's hard not to stop what your doing and just watch.

I heard about this over a year ago and wasn't sure exactly what it would do to the area. What will happen to the area above the dam? I guess I better get up there a few more times before this happens.

I've got bandanas tied on to both my packs and my Camelbak. Haven't met a fellow HAZer yet, but some folks on Mt. Graham asked me what it was for and I turned them on to HAZ. You can buy them ay any surplus store for a couple of dollars. See you on the trail!

I only carry on an overnight trip or when in bear country. Not necessarily to shoot the bear, but hopefully to scare him off. I would never shoot an animal or person unless it was my last possible resort. I carry a compact S&W 45 acp. It has a capacity of 8 and I think that is plenty for 99% of situ...

I was camping on the rim a couple of weeks ago and it just amazes me what an effect these beetles have had on the forest. Along with the fires and drought the future looks bleak, but I can only hope the trees will bounce back.

Hikes in the Whetstones/Santa Ritas?

I finally did my first trip to Kartchner this weekend and it was awesome. Just wondering if anybody knew of any hikes in the Whetstones or the nearby Santa Ritas? I'm going back in December for the opening of the Big Room and would like to make a whole weekend out of it.

Great article SUN HIKER! I faintly remember reading an article about Jaguar sightings in the Coronado N.F. near Douglas. Personally haven't seen one yet but will be on the lookout.
