Re: Mogollon Rim backpacking loops
@nonot Thank you for confirming my conclusions about loops in the Rim. I was hoping that I was somehow missing some trail connections. I am driving back from my WFR recert in Flag in November and had hoped to do something in the western section from the Pine TH. I was unaware of the fire until your...

Mogollon Rim backpacking loops
I've backpacked the Cabin Loop in November, 2022, and I'm interested in other loops 20-40 miles that others have put together in the area. I was looking at one that starts near Pine - the Highline Trail, but it looks like the return is a lot of road hiking on the Rim Road. So if anyone has other loo...

Thanks for the beta. This is a whole new area for me so I'm appreciative of the information. I'm driving up from AJ, planning to camp in my van, then do the loop. I figured I'd also spend the night of my return in the van, then drive back the next moring.

I'm taking a tarp and I have a good Borah Bivy; it's not a bug bivy. The ranger said it has been windy, so between the tarp and the bivy I should be good. Thanks for the info. I'm used to camping in these conditions.

When you say "chilly", what should I expect for nighttime temps? Do you think a tent is necessary or can I cowboy camp with a good bag and bivy?

@nonot Thanks for the suggestions. I am from Alaska, so cold weather is no problem - I have the gear and the experience.

Mogollon Rim, Payson suggestions.
I'm staying in AJ and have a few days to hike/backpack and would like to explore the Mogollon Rim area. I've spent lots of time in the Goldfield Mtns and the Superstitions and want to explore a new (for me) area. I have a 4wd vehicle for camping. Thanks.

Exploring Mazatzal Wilderness
I have a high clearance 4wd van and I'm looking for a trailhead/area in the Mazatzals where I might base camp for a few days and do day hikes and/or 1-4 day backpacking trips. My hope is to ideally park once and hike for five or six days. The more remote the better. I am looking at guidebooks, maps,...

Re: Goldfield Mountains Trail Names from MP204 AZ 88
@chumley As a longtime SAR person, I know that a known local name for a trail that does not appear on a map can simplify things for SAR searches as opposed to having to having only a gpx track to follow. As I explained earlier, I live in an area where there are numerous social trails that all have ...

Re: Goldfield Mountains Trail Names from MP204 AZ 88
@rcorfman You seem to be missing my point; I am simply asking if there are informal or common names for the trails that don't appear on maps. I live in Kodiak, Alaska, and almost all of our trails are social trails that have developed over time and do not appear on topo maps, etc. However, they all...

Re: Goldfield Mountains Trail Names from MP204 AZ 88
How about you just give your wife a link to the gps track you're following so she can send it to SAR when you don't come home on time? It doesn’t have to have names. It’s probably the most helpful info you could share. 3 likes like it Actually I do that already. She just likes for trails to have na...

Re: Goldfield Mountains Trail Names from MP204 AZ 88
@joebartels I kinda figured that due to a lack of signage, etc. I was hoping to find some common local names applied to the various trails. Also, while I have you on the line, I am unable to find "Golden Dome" when I search locations. I stumbled across the Golden Dome Loop as an alternati...

@chumley
I'm probably a bit dense, but neither has been helpful. It's just that when my wife wants to know where I'm hiking, it's nice to put a name on a trail rather than "on some trail in the Willow Spring area".

Goldfield Mountains Trail Names from MP204 AZ 88
I've done a few hikes from the AZ88 milepost 204 trailhead, but can't figure out the names of some of the trails I've hiked. There is what I consider the main trail which starts from the wash below the parking lot and is closed to ORVs. It is about three miles long and ends in a wash. There are some...

Superstition Ridgeline Loop from First Water TH?
The subject says it all - somewhere recently I saw a mention of this loop. I found Wally Frack's Superstition Ridgeline loop, but it starts at the Lost Gold Mine TH.

I think it has to do with a mining claim, but I can't really speak with authority on it.
